5. Le Cyc
(Martin Eckart)
For the project I built a projection system in PD-GEM which allows the
artist to "perform" the visuals (including panning/zooming) in
real-time with the band. It's a glorified slideshow but I'm proud of
it :)
We're performing that and our newer project "Hello Adventure" (no
online samples...yet. More of a stop-motion animation piece) in
Montreal this coming weekend and in other parts of Ontario through
early November so if you're in the area please do come say hi.

11- WORKSHOP TITLE: Starting with Sensors and Interaction
Instructor: Hans-Christoph Steiner (hans(a)eds.org), Interaction
Designer and Artist; Pd, Arduino, and Firmata Developer
Administrative Support:
Duration: 1 Day
Date: Wednesday, 20th (10am-5pm) of October of 2010
Theme: Using Pd and Arduino to create real-time interaction
The combination of sensors and computers provide myriad opportunities
for creating interactions. This workshop will introduce how to use
computers and sensors to generate real-time interaction in the
physical world with light and movement. Pd (aka Pure Data) will be
introduced as a simple programming enviroment for real-time
interaction. Arduinos running Firmata software will be used to
interface to the sensors, electronics, servos, etc. This workshop will
be a combination of short lectures, hands-on instruction, and
unstructured time to work on learning and exploring with support of
the instructor. While Pd is fairly easy to learn and designed for
artists, familiarity with basic computer programming will be very
beneficial. You will be able to apply the concepts learned in this
course to a wide range of programming environments where Arduino /
Firmata is supported, including Flash, Processing, and more.
We have the required electronics tools at the venue but your
encouraged to make arrangements for purchasing the following kit: http://www.adafruit.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=17&products_…
Students are also encouraged to bring additional hardware and/or
tools they are interested in working with. Bring DMX lighting, LEDs,
projectors, etc. to experiment with real-time lighting control. Bring
servos or motor controllers to experiment with motion. Bring
accelerometers, rotary sensors; flex sensors, etc. to experiment with
sensing motion. Bring basic architecture model making supplies to
build a model to work with. We also recommend that you bring any
electronics equipment you may have including a soldering iron and
solder, wire strippers, helping hands, digital multimeter, etc.
Materials required: Bring your own laptop.
Software: Pd-extended (http://puredata.info/downloads) and Arduino (http://arduino.cc
), both free software, download and install before arriving, we can
help troubleshoot any problems that arise.
Available Seats: 12 students/ Cost: $150
Skills required:
Location: NYC Resistor, 87 3rd Ave, 4th Floor, Brooklyn, NY,

Time for more patching! Pure Data 0.43 is about to be released, so
some of us will be working on finalizing that. It includes a major
update to the GUI to enable lots of customization. You can now
customize the Pd GUI using simple plugins. Come bring your projects
or try out Pd 0.43.
We'll be at NYC Resistor this Sunday from 3-8pm.
http://puredata.info/community/NYCPatchingCircle
We spend enough time alone staring at our computers; we are proposing
to work together. So often issues that arise when working can be
solved with a quick two minute discussion that would take hours to
solve alone. We have Dorkbot to see people's work, we have Share where
anyone can play, we have workshops and universities to learn from.
This is a meeting where we all can come to work.
This is an informal gathering of patching and patchers (Pd, Max/MSP/
Jitter, and even vvvv, Eyesweb, Labview, etc.). Beginners and
Experienced welcome. Open to everyone, students, the public, etc. Work
on personal projects, professional projects, school projects, ask for
help, help others, or just patch quietly to yourself, in a room full of
other people patching patches and helping other people patch.
Every third Sunday of the month, so this Sunday, August 15th!
3-8pm (a little later than before)
Free!

Rencontres, discussions et échanges entre artistes et développeurs
utilisant les nouvelles technologies de programmation issues du libre
(PureData/Processing/Arduino/SuperCollider/etc.).
performances.

Hi,
Following the Pd Berlin meeting last Tuesday, the guys encouraged me to share my patches.
Here are my step sequencers for Pd vanilla. With a bit of imagination they can be used for many things other than beat/drum patterns. In the example patches you can see one used as a metro to drive the other sequencers which can lead to interesting groove/swing/shuffle sounds. Also to repetitively control parameters like filter cutoff/pitch/LFO rate/effects on synthesizers too. Connect them to each other to create conditionally generative randomness. All these methods are employed in the example patches.
http://puredata.info/Members/saintidle/j-array-lane-pd-j-array-numbers-pd-j…
Feedback welcome of course but I'm afraid they're supplied as is for you to use and abuse. I doubt I'll have the time to update/document them properly!
Cheers,
John Flynn.

Pure Data (or Pd) is a real-time graphical programming environment for
audio, video, and graphical processing. This introductory workshop is
ideal for new users of Pure Data who are finding the ?vocabulary? and
?grammar? difficult to grasp. We will learn Pure Data as one would
learn any other language, taking a series of very basic examples from
the Pure Data FLOSS Manual. This workshop gives a good starting point
for more advanced Pd workshops, or participation in the Berlin Pure
Data users? group. The workshop will be taught in English ;-)
Participation is limited to 12 participants.

Learn how to use simple objects from our modern environment
(resistors, capacitors, transistors, LEDs, integrated circuit chips?)
to design and build your own personal, touch-activated primitive noise
synthesizer. Each is a tiny world of its own, using primitive analog
computers in combination with feedback, sensors and audio inputs to
create a unique sound. Even from the same plan, no two are alike!
Participants should bring some sort of box, container or other
creative enclosure to put their circuit inside of?past workshops have
seen synthesizers made in suitcases, flashlights, film cans, coconuts,
children?s toys, super 8 cameras, cigar boxes, knaackebrod, books and
hand-sewn masks. Check the videos on the Macumbista website for some
ideas and inspiration. This workshop will end in a free public
presentation of the instruments you have created, invite your friends!

Manipulating recorded soundfiles is one of Pure Data?s most powerful
features. However, the process of doing this remains one of the most
confusing tasks for newcomers. During this two day workshop, we will
cover the basics of loading soundfiles to tables, live capturing and
looping, adjusting tempo and pitch, changing the looping, starting and
stopping points of your playback and an introduction to granular
synthesis. We will also examine ParticleChamber as an example of a
full-fledged soundfile manipulation application built entirely with
Pd. Some previous experience with Pd and/or participation in the ?Ich
bin ein Objekt? workshop is recommended. This workshop will end in a
free public presentation of the instruments you have created, invite
your friends!
