| | Performative science: Between science and media art
| |
| | Florian Grond, a researcher from Austria, will present the
| | different approaches from the basic research group from the ZKM,
| | Centre for art and media technology in Karlsruhe (Germany).
| | In the basic research group, several people with different
| | backgrounds (physicists, psychologists, programmers, chemists,
| | new media artists) work together on topics like nonlinear complex
| | systems and interface technologies. The results range from
| | scientific research to media art installations. Some of the
| | projects that will be presented are the audio visual installation
| | SOL, visible and audible data from 22 years of the sun,
| | INTERMITTENT, a generative audiovisual installation featuring
| | nonlinear dynamics behavior, QUANTUM MIRROR, an interactive
| | installation featuring some quantum effects, KOGNITION IM SPORT,
| | a project together with high school students to enhance training
| | situation of basket ballplayers, "_ZUR FORM" a future project
| | with a tangible user interface. HILBERT_01 HILBERT_02, a project
| | in progress about mapping questions from image theory. Further
| | projects from the basic research institute, that can be be
| | presented if times allows are the LIQUID PERCEPTRON and the
| | EYEVISIONBOT. Questions and discussion are very much appreciated.

| | Volée
| |

INTERFACE and SOCIETY
In our everyday life we constantly have to cope more or less successfully
with interfaces. We use the mobile phone, the mp3 player, and our laptop,
in order to gain access to the digital part of our life. In recent years
this situation has lead to the creation of new interdisciplinary subjects
like "Interaction Design" or "Physical Computing".
We live between two worlds, our physical environment and the digital
space. Technology and its digital space are our second nature and the
interfaces are our points of access to this technosphere.
Since artists started working with technology they have been developing
interfaces and modes of interaction. The interface itself became an
artistic thematic.
The project INTERFACE and SOCIETY investigates how artists deal with
the transformation of our everyday life through technical interfaces.
With the rapid technological development a thoroughly critique of the
interface towards society is necessary.
The role of the artist is thereby crucial. S/he has the freedom to
deal with technologies and interfaces beyond functionality and usability.
The project INTERFACE and SOCIETY is looking at this development
with a special focus on the artistic contribution.

INTERFACE and SOCIETY is an umbrella for a range of activities
throughout 2006 at Atelier Nord in Oslo. Read more at:

Plug N Play from 8-11pm (201 Smith st, Fitzroy).
Hope you can join me if yr in that area of the world.

a tiny UDP-based Mail Transport Agent written in pd can be found here:
http://puredata.info/Members/zmoelnig/pd-mta/view
dependencies:
pd>=0.39
zexy>=2.0
features:
only MTA i know that speaks UDP
almost(!) SMTP compliant
comes with tiny Mail User Agent that can be used with the MTA (well,
its rather a "sendmail" implementation than an MUA)
issues:
only speaks UDP until now
SMTP is wrapped into FUDI (which is not SMTP compliant)
i wrote it within a few hours because i needed it for a performance
(transmitting an email via semaphore flags).
i was amazed how fast an SMTP server can be done within pd (after all it
is a rather complex software);
if the license texts included into the patch are omitted, the patch is
less than half the size of the GnuGPL license file.

hi all,
heres the first object from the jmax stuff i made, ported to pd.
bassemu~ is a emulation of an analogue bass synth. it includes the obligatory
filter, saw/rect/tri/sine waveform select, an extra hi-pass filter. you can
also feed another signal to its left inlet, and filter that, either alone or
mixed to the vco.
also included is a small, messy gop abstraction to resemble a 16-step
sequencer.
you can find the source on http://home.mamalala.de/bassemu-0.2.tgz
greets and have fun,
chris

******PURE DATA SUMMER SCHOOL 2006******
GOTO10 at SPACE MEDIA ARTS
17 - 28 July 2006
Monday - Friday, 10:30 - 4:30pm
£100 for 10 days workshop
***A two week boot camp, now accepting applications.***
Pure Data is a free and open source real-time graphical programming
environment used by artists to create a range of visual arts, theatre,
dance, audio, installation, performance and media art works.
Pure Data is ideal for those looking to integrate technology into their
work for the first time, or advanced media artists looking to explore
new tools and new ways to combine them in a unified environment. It is
easy to use Pure Data to create interactive environments, link
animations and sound, control hardware and electronics, stream audio,
generate real time visuals and develop interfaces for other programs.
In this intensive two week course, participants will learn Pure Data
from scratch and explore in detail some of its most exciting extensions.
Using the Pure:Dyne creative GNU/Linux operating system, participants
will discover real time sound design, audiovisual techniques, physical
modelling with Gem and PmPD/MSD, how to extend PD into hardware and
electronics using CAT/purrr and generative 2D/3D visuals using Packet
Forth.

Another libc port: stat. It lets you get all sorts of data from a
file. Quite handy for a number of things, like testing what kind of
file something is, or get the time of the last access, status change,
or modification. Should work on all platforms.
Also included is [file_type] object which is written in Pd and uses
[stat]. It tells you what kind of file something is (file, folder,
character, block, fifo, etc).
Of course, it'll be in the next Pd-extended test release.

Call me crazy, but I just made some objects so that you can get the
info from /etc/passwd and /etc/group, and convert between UIDs/GIDs
and usernames/groupnames. Its part of my effort to provide as many
low level primitives within Pd as possible. Or really, its make a
libc interface for Pd.

Of course, these will be included in the next Pd-extended release. I
haven't touched Windows yet, but I plan on it.
