Virginia Tech is seeking graduate student candidates for a competitive
Institute for Creativity, Arts, and Technology (ICAT) graduate research
assistantship starting with the academic year 2019-20. We are
specifically looking for students who are interested in studying in the
newfound Human-Centered Design (HCD) transdisciplinary individualized
PhD and/or Computer Science's Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). We are
also willing to consider Masters level applicants to the CS program with
focus on HCI. Additional assistantships may be available through the HCD
program.
HCD Option
Virginia Tech's new individualized Human-Centered Design (HCD) iPhD
transdisciplinary degree is closely aligned with the Institute for
Creativity, Arts, and Technology (ICAT). iPhD is a degree designed
primarily to support individually tailored PhD experiences, allowing
students to actively participate in shaping their plan of study.
CS HCI Option
The graduate program in the Department of Computer Science at Virginia
Tech is on its way to becoming one of the top programs in the country.
The resources and facilities for research areas such as human-computer
interaction, bioinformatics, and high-end computing are state of the
art, and the growing list of specialized masters and doctoral degrees in
a variety of areas provides opportunities for students to concentrate
their research and study on the specific aspects of computer science in
which they are most interested. At Virginia Tech, students receive
firsthand instruction by award-winning faculty. In the computer science
department, that means that graduate students have the opportunity to
learn from the professors who have helped to define today's computer
industry. The Center for Human-Computer Interaction is a part of ICAT,
offering a diverse infrastructure and human expertise for cutting-edge
research.
The GAship in question seeks candidates with a solid research background
and aspirations with strong communication skills (verbal and written)
and a sense of independence and self-sufficiency. We are particularly
seeking students interested in sonification, sound spatialization, and
interactive technologies, including (but not limited to) NIMEs,
mind-body technologies, laptop/mobile ensembles,
mobile/wearable/physical computing, etc. Knowledge of Max and
Pd/Pd-L2Ork programming environments, C/C++, Java, or equivalent is
strongly preferred, as well as skills in other domains (e.g. interactive
multimedia, K-12 education, 3D animation, etc.).
This is a renewable assistantship with a full tuition waiver and
a stipend. To be eligible candidates need to apply, be accepted, and
enroll in the new HCD iPhD or the Human-Computer Interaction Computer
Science program with primary focus in the computer music domain focusing
on one or more of the aforesaid areas of interest.
The successful candidate will be given an opportunity to participate in
conducting research using the cutting edge 148+ loudspeaker system and
consequently its innovative spatialization, sonification, and immersion
approaches in the new $100M Moss Arts Center and more specifically
Institute for Creativity, Arts, and Technology's three-story Cube space
and its smaller counterpart, the immersive Perform Studio, as well as
the new DISIS facilities, a part of a $600,000 renovation that opened in
January 2015. They will also work closely with ICAT faculty and
students on a number of collaborative projects.

Guthman Musical Instrument Competition

Georgia Tech's 2019 Margaret Guthman Musical Instrument Competition is an annual event aimed at identifying the world's next generation of musical instruments and unveiling the best new ideas in musicality, design, engineering, and impact.
The Guardian called the competition "The Pulitzer of the New Instrument World," and The New York Times described the "special, otherworldly sound that you can feel permeating your soul" which became the hallmark of the competition. Fast Company explained how Guthman's "Futuristic Instruments will change how we make music," and the Atlanta Magazine suggests that "at the Guthman Competition, innovative instruments just might predict the future of music."
The Guthman Competition will take place March 8-9, 2019 at Georgia Tech's Ferst Center for the Arts, in Atlanta, Georgia.
The deadline for submissions is October 10, 2018. Approximately twenty semi-finalists will be invited to demonstrate, discuss, and perform with their instruments as they compete for $10,000 in cash prizes.

Hi, two related announcements! I've Finished translating the vol. 2 of my
Live Electronics Tutorial to English, with now 323 examples!

the (still in test phase) 0.49-0 release of Pure Data (though 99% will work
in 48). Anyway, vol. 2 is where things gets a little serious... there's FFT
stuff and I really like my take on filters (folder "29").
I hope this becomes a relevant tutorial for Pd. Let me know what you think.
Next plan is to write a book where these are the examples. This is a very
special announcement for me as I've been working on this for 10 years now
and I'm happy to make it available in english. Not only that, but to
finally port it out of Pd Extended and into Vanilla!
Porting to Vanilla relies heavily and extensively in the ELSE library, and
this is where most of my work has been put recently, in order to port this
out of Extended. This brings us to the next announcement: I have a new
release that it relies on, Beta 12! Find it on deken (pd => Help => Find

for details. Newer additions to the tutorial now depend on developments of
ELSE.
The last release was a couple of weeks ago but I'm really proud of the
advancements I made. I'd like to highlight the additions to [envgen~], you
really should check it out, it's a very powerful and versatile envelope
generator. I still wanna allow for exponential curves, maybe next time. This
release of ELSE also already relies on Pd 0.49, but works for the most part
with 0.48.

Algorithms that Matter (ALMAT) focuses on the experimentation with
algorithms and their embedding in sound works. Rather than conceiving
algorithms as established building blocks or the a priori
formalisation of a compositional idea, we look at them as performing
entities whose consequences are irreducible to models. Algorithms
“matter” in the sense that matter and meaning cannot be distinguished,
neither can artists and their computational tools. Algorithms actively
produce spaces and temporalities which become entangled with their
physical embeddings.
The 2019 edition of the workshop focuses on the development of a
site-specific sound installation. The installation will explore the
interactions of algorithmic and physical spaces and their dynamic and
mutable properties. Participants will work on the premise that spaces
and our perception of them change depending on presence, absence, the
movement of visitors, the time of the day, the rhythm of the
surroundings as well as the sonic and algorithmic interventions we
bring into them.
This workshop seeks to attract computer music practitioners, sound
artists and composers by offering a platform for exchange and
reflection about their personal approaches towards algorithmic
experimentation. The participants are invited to develop their various
approaches within an atmosphere of collaboration, where special
emphasis will be given to the translation of environmental data (such
as sensor input from the surroundings and visitors) through computer
music systems developed and assembled by the participants and
tutors. One question we want to pursue is how behaviours can be
composed that transition from "technical and artificial" to "organic
and alive", particularly through the articulation of spatiality.
The workshop starts with an internal presentation of the participants
for the other participants and tutors. An initial sound situation
using a large number of small reconfigurable speakers forms the
starting point for in-situ work. This structure will then be available
for decomposition and rearrangement by the participants. The space
will become a public exhibition halfway through the workshop, making
it possible to observe and adapt to the interactions with the
audience, a central question in the making of sound installations.
The workshop will be held with technical infrastructure provided by
the Institute for Electronic Music and Acoustics (IEM), including an
48-channel sound system and a selection of sensors. The workshop
ALMAT was developed by David Pirrò and Hanns Holger Rutz (both IEM
Graz) and will be held together with the special support by Robin
Minard.
