Here's the first test release of Pduino, the Pd firmware for Arduino
(http://arduino.cc) and a matching Pd object, [arduino]. This allows
you get data from the digital and analog inputs, and send data to the
PWM and digital outputs. It also allows you to change the digital
pins from input, output, or PWM. And you can choose how many analog
inputs and turn on/off digital input.
http://at.or.at/hans/pd/objects.html
Keep in mind its a test release, the only thing I am not sure about
right now is digitalInput, everything else seems to work fine.

The latest version of aubio, 0.3.0, is now available. aubio is a library
for audio labelling. The goal of this project is to provide automatic
feature extraction algorithms to other audio software projects. Features
include onset detection, beat tracking, and pitch detection. Functions
can be used off-line in sound editors and software samplers, or online
in audio effects and virtual instruments.
This release features several changes and includes a Puredata external,
containing 5 objects:
* aubiopitch~ pitch tracking object, similar to fiddle~ and pick~
* aubioonset~ onset detection, similar to bonk~
* aubiotempo~ beat tracking
* aubiotss~ transient / steady state separation (experimental)
* aubioquiet~ simple silence detector
Not all aubio features are available from PD yet, but onset and pitch
detection routines should be more robust than other existing externals.
Other important changes include:
* new pitch detection method, yinfft
* new beat tracking algorithm (improved from 0.2.0)
* enhancements to the onset detection algorithms
* improved aubiocut, can now slice at beats and silences
* new aubiopitch python program to extract pitch tracks
* plotting features for aubiocut and aubiopitch
* python interface refactored
* updated documentation
As usual, the source code can be found at http://aubio.piem.org/ ,
and Debian packages are available from http://piem.org/debian/ .
Feedback most appreciated!

Hello all,
Resurfacing is currently being installed at the Interaccess Electronic
Media Arts Centre.
The show will up up until Thursday May 25th, so this is the last week to
be able to see it.
A text-only version of the press-release follows:
For Immediate Release May 15, 2006
Media Contact: Ben Bogart, 416-516-5760 to email ben(a)ekran.org
Resurfacing
Resurfacing will be exhibited at:
May 23rd to 25th 2006
12:00pm to 5:00pm at The Interaccess Electronic Media Arts Centre
9 Ossington Avenue, Toronto, ON
Resurfacing is an interactive installation by Ben Bogart and Donna Marie
Vakalis that captures and archives viewpoints or moments from its own
context. Moments are evaluated by how they change over time and the
extent to which they engage the audience. The collection of viewpoints
is projected onto two screens. Each viewpoint is projected one at a time
on a 4x3 foot touch-screen that allows the audience to push through
time. Simultaneously the second screen shows a map of all the viewpoints
in terms of their position in context and their success.
Meaning is a complex tapestry created from patches of theory. These
patches are in constant flux and reorganization. Meaning is the process
of rethinking and reconsidering. The patches of meaning do not always
connect elegantly. Meaning is overgrown with seams. The caretakers of
meaning are not only individuals but a multiplicity of objects and
subjects. Meaning grows from the community negotiation of these seams.
Resurfacing is the shifting of the frames of viewpoint. The flat surface
becomes a deep collection of frames from the present, the past and their
intersections.
Ben Bogart graduated from the New Media program at Ryerson University in
2004. He is an artist, teacher and programmer working in Toronto. Ben
has presented work in Toronto, Ottawa, Montréal, Vancouver, Seattle,
Helsinki, Bergen and Barcelona.
Donna Marie Vakalis is a graduate student of architecture at the
University of Toronto.
Resurfacing is made possible by the Canada council for the Arts, and the
artists gratefully thank the Interaccess Electronic Media Arts Centre,
Artengine, The Design Exchange, The Evolving Stories Studio and KeyTec Inc.

Hi,
I'll do a concert at May 18 2006 as part of the Scene NRW: Baltics
festival. It will be an evening with literature and music, where
besides me the Latvian writer Pauls Bankovskis will read and Selfish
from Lativa will do a DJ set.
All this will happen at the Elektra bar in Cologne, Germany. I will
perform an extended version of the stuff I did at the Linux Audio
Conference 2006, which means lots of physical modelling with [msd2D]
and [msd3D] for visuals and sound in Pure Data.
Some more info, pics and URLs at http://footils.org/cms/show/53
I still haven't found a good name for this performance. Code name
always was: "Faltig" but today another name occured to me with may be
even cuter:
"EinstÌrzende Bauklötze".
Or maybe not.
Ciao

Dear Pure Data users,
We have just released Pure Data objects for our BlueSense range of products. BlueSense allows you to (wirelessly) connect sensor and actuator modules. Currently we have modules available for analog inputs (infrared distance sensors, force sensors,...), digital inputs (counters, rotary encoders), digital outputs (including PWM) and servo motor control.
In a few weeks additional modules will be available for analog output (digital pot meters), dc motor control and do-it-yourself module kits. Please have a look at our website:

Die Rencontres internationales sind mehr als nur eine einfache
Ausstellung. Jede Ausgabe ist gleichzeitig ein interkulturelles Forum
mit zahlreichen Gästen aus der ganzen Welt. International anerkannte
Künstler und Filmemacher neben jungen, aufstrebenden Kollegen, Leiter
bedeutender Kunsteinrichtungen neben Betreibern alternativer Strukturen
I just finished a decently flushed out sketch of an intro tutorial
and I would love some feedback. Give it a shot:

There is still a lot of material to cover, but this covers the
foundations. Plus there should be more exercises.

Agostino Di Scipio
Using PD for Live Interactions in Sound. An Exploratory Approach ("Composer's Talk")
This presentation illustrates the principles and motivations behind
the composition of Modes of Interference, a work conceived as an
audio feedback system with trumpet and electronics. It focuses in
particular on the Pd signal-processing patch specifically designed
for that, basically implementing the nonlinear coupling between a
microphone input and two loudspeakers' output. The particular
coupling methods allow for control of feedback between the two ends
of the audio loop.
The Pd patch has two main functionalities. (1) It is designed to
deliberately cause, and dynamically handle, high-gain audio feedback
situations, thus providing useful musical control over the so-called
Larsen effect (that way, a typical problem in live electroacoustics
is turned into an opportunity for musical exploration). (2) It is
also designed to dynamically transform any input sound material by
means of simple methods of granular re-sampling, indirectly
affecting the feedback loop itself. The results widely vary
depending on several acoustical circumstances, and reflecting the
network of mutually dependent variables in the overall audio system
loop. The presentation briefly illustrates how that musical
potential is explored in Modes of Interference.

128 Is Not Enough - Data Structures in Pure Data
A lesser known feature of Miller Puckette's popular audio and media
development framework Pure Data is the possibility to create user
defined graphical data structures. Although the data structures are
included in Pd for several years, only recently a sigificant number
of users discovered and used this feature. This paper will give an
introduction to the possibilities of Pd s data structures for
composers and musicians and present several example applications.
Eric Lyon
A Sample Accurate Triggering System for Pd and Max/MSP
A system of externals for Pd and Max/MSP is described that uses
click triggers for sample-accurate timing. These externals
interoperate and can also be used to control existing Pd and Max/MSP
externals that are not sample-accurate through conversion from
clicks to bangs.

Clothing was among the first cultural and technological achievements of the
human. Since its first intention as a second skin, communication
technologies and smart materials dramatically changed its use.
Clothing itself became an interface to the digital space which surrounds us.
The workshop will show how textiles and technology appear in artistic
practices and will introduce materials and techniques in use and in research.
In the workshop the participants will work and experiment on an expanded
idea of fashion and technology.
Especially participants who already attended the previous workshops will be
able to apply their ideas and skills on the very fabric of society.

Physical Interaction Design for Music
June 26 - July 7 (2 weeks, including July 4)
Instructors: Michael Gurevich, Carr Wilkerson
This workshop integrates programming, electronics, interaction design,
audio, and interactive music. Focus will be on hands-on applications
using sensors and microprocessors in conjunction with real-time DSP to
make music. Specific technologies will include C programming for Atmel
AVR microcontrollers, PD and/or Max/MSP for music synthesis, and sensors
including force-sensitive resistors, bend sensors, accelerometers, IR
range finders, etc. Participants will design and build working
prototypes using a kit that can be taken home at the end of the
workshop. Further issues to be explored will include modes and mappings
in computer music, exercises in invention, and applications of sensors
and electronics to real-time music. The course will be augmented by a
survey of existing controllers and pieces of interactive music.
This workshop is intended for:
* Musicians or composers interested in exploring new possibilities
in interactive music in a hands on and technical way;
* Anyone looking to gain valuable skills in basic analog and
digital electronics, with a focus on invention;
* Engineers, computer scientists, or product designers interested
in exploring artistic outlets for their talents an collaborating with
performers and composers.
The workshop will consist of half-day supervised lab sessions, and
half-day lectures, classroom exercises and discussions. Classroom
sessions will feature live demos and/or concerts of interactive music
and instruments. Participants are encouraged (but by no means required)
to bring their own laptop computers with any music software/hardware
they already use.

Ok, it works more or less the same on all platforms now. Seems
pretty good, needs some minor tweaks. It just outputs each filename
in a directory as a symbol message.

I got env vars working on Windows, thanks to ExpandEnvironmentStrings
(). I couldn't find an equivalent for GNU libc, Mac OS X, or GNU/
Linux. Anyone know of a function like that?
