Hello,
next tuesday, 22nd June, will be the next meeting of Pure Data users
in Berlin at NK (http://www.nkprojekt.de/) - Elsenstr. 52, 2HH 2Etage.
Today's theme: PDP - Servando Barreiro will speak a bit about the pdp
visual library, and show some possibilities. Beisdes that, the usual
patching + Q&A between participants will occur as usual.
For more information, look up
http://puredata.info/community/organization/pd-berlin/pd-berlin-users-group.
We also encourage you to take an active part, and put up suggestions for
topics you want to talk about / topics you want to be talked about.
Doors are open from 20h-20h15. After that they'll be closed, and you will
have to call someone from the Pd-meeting to get in. To get a telephone
number to call or confirm assistance you can write to
info_at_minitronics.net.
Please, don´t call to the staff of NK to open the doors. They let us use
the space but we have to take care about having the meeting without
producing any disturbance to them, and to clean the space after the
meeting.
We would apreciate if you would send us a small mail to
info_at_minitronics.net with your name, Pd experience and interests, so
that we know how many people might be coming. Or put your name in the
pd-berlin wiki page.
We would like to thank the support and willingness of NK in the
organization of these events.

We are reviving the New York City Patching Circle and making it a
monthly thing! Every third Sunday of the month, we'll be meeting at
NYC Resistor.
We spend enough time alone staring at our computers; we are proposing
to work together. So often issues that arise when working can be
solved with a quick two minute discussion that would take hours to
solve alone. We have Dorkbot to see people's work, we have Share where
anyone can play, we have workshops and universities to learn from.
This is a meeting where we all can come to work.
This is an informal gathering of patching and patchers (Pd, Max/MSP/
Jitter, and even vvvv, Eyesweb, Labview, etc.). Beginners and
Experienced welcome. Open to everyone, students, the public, etc. Work
on school projects, personal projects, ask for help, help others, or
just patch quietly to yourself, in a room full of other people
patching patches and helping other people patch.
Every third Sunday of the month, starting June 20th 2010

Hi all,
I built a fresh snapshot (*) of GridFlow [1] (svn trunk r5698) as a
package for Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid using Launchpad.
Get it while it's hot from the Puredyne [2] team package archive [3] :
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install python-software-properties
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:puredyne-team/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install gridflow
pd -lib zexy:Gem:gridflow
As with anything, read the documentation if you're not sure what those
commands will do, especially when sudo is involved :)

Have fun!

PS: I'm not sure if I did it the One True Way: ie I don't know if the
package will co-operate / inter-operate with both puredata and also
pd-extended, hopefully someone can point out where I've gone wrong! I've
only tested it against the puredata/gem/pd-zexy packages from Lucid on
64bit, more testing and feedback welcome! Thanks!

about the automata ::::::
Automata_Sonoro_v001 (generative sound machina) is a software
programmed in Pure Data for generating real-time sound compositions.
It creates compositions from 7 small sound seeds (samples of 5-15
seconds) with which it generates 7 files of 1 min, to be with those
who play after, transforming and mixing them iteratively in a
mechanical evolution, growth and deterioration. Its based on the
Fractal model and somehow with more conceptual distance also inspired
by the work of Alvin Lucier "I'm sitting in a room" 1969.
All of this does not chase to carry out strictly fractal music, but born of
an
interest to know and experiment with these math-concepts and
strategies looking for a king of organic unpredicatability, noncontrol
and chaos with which creatively play during the live perfomance.

Medialab-Prado receives an Honorary Mention at Prix Ars Electronica
2010
_May 31, 2010_
*The production platform Interactivos? wins an Honorary Mention in the
category of "Interactive Art" as a unique space for the collective
creation of interactive installations.*
Since Interactivos? was held for the first time in 2006, it has had
remarkable success with its open innovation model, in which ten ideas
chosen through a public open call are developed by groups of
collaborators from all over the world. They attend the workshop to
contribute their knowledge to carrying out the projects. During the
two-week workshop, a context for collective learning and living and
working together is created that generates surprising results.
To date, 17 workshops have been held around the world adhering to the
Interactivos? methodology, giving rise to over 150 projects including
augmented reality games, data visualization, performing arts,
experimental video games, and sound installations. Artists, designers,
educators, researchers, scientists, sociologists, etc. have taken part,
each contributing their varying types of knowledge and specializations,
making a very productive and enriching learning and creation environment.
Ars Electronica has given annual awards since 1987 to the most
outstanding projects in digital culture worldwide, including interactive
works and installations, digital communities, sound art, and computer
animation. In the case of Interactivos? from Medialab-Prado, an
exceptional award was given to a platform for experimentation and
collective creation of prototypes of interactive installations, whose
success has been proved throughout nine international workshops held in
various cities around the world (Madrid, New York, Lima, Mexico, Gijón
and San Sebastián) over the past four years.
The next Interactivos? workshop will be held at Medialab-Prado from 7-23
June 2010, titled *Interactivos?'10: Neighbourhood Science*
The call for collaborators will be open until June 4, 2010 (no
registration fee).

Please note this is a Linux-optimized version and it has known
pd.tk-related issues when running on a non-Linux platform (these are a
simple matter of tracking them down and cleaning them up, beyond that
most if not all of the improvements should be OS-agnostic).
Some of the abstractions still lack detailed descriptions--we should be
addressing these hopefully soon. Likewise, we will be updating
additional documentation as soon as our time allows us to do so.
Community contributions are more than welcome.
NB: a good chunk of the improvements have been submitted upstream so
hopefully they will be making their way eventually into the vanilla
releases. Remaining improvements will be submitted soon.

au programme :
1. la patch du projet Aether9
presentée par Christiaan CRUZ et Audrey SAMSON
Aether9 is developing a mobility contingent for its performances during a
residency at Agence TOPO in Montréal. The aether9 collective has developed its
own tool to stream remote performances from anywhere on the globe, which are
concatenated and manifested on a web page (in combination with a live
performance in front of an audience). This ability to stream audio/visual
remotely has thus far depended on Max/MSP. During the residence two aether9
members have been writing and learning in Pure Data to create a PD patch that
essentially captures webcam stream, manipulates the image and uploads it to a
server. We propose to present our fumbling, our successes and frustrations with
making this patch as well as how the project aether9 works.
* project website: aether9.org
* interface: 1904.cc
2. Gem for data visualization
by Peter LEE
I will present preliminary work that uses GEM particle systems for data
visualization in two projects, one a (possibly) scientific application, and the
other for a theater performance. The first feeds data from a genetic study into
GEM to visualize multiple variables associating at once. The second takes data
generated live from biofeedback sensors to visualize physiologic signals of
emotion. Both projects make use of the same interface for patching data to
visualization parameters. The challenge is to find the mappings and scaling
factors that enhance the viewer’s ability to detect differences in the data. I
shall be interested in hearing ideas from the community on how to improve
real-time rendering of particle systems to create images with greater nuance
and expressivity.
4. Traduction
(discussion de groupe)
Ce sera une discussion informelle pour savoir qui est intéressé à
participer à des efforts de traduction de la documentation de PureData.
Nous parlerons de différentes sources de documentation et de diverses
approches de traduction.
Cette discussion a été proposée par Thomas-O. FREDERICKS, lequel sera
absent ce samedi. Nous poursuivrons cette discussion lors d'une
rencontre ultérieure.

WORKSHOP 27-30 MAY 2010
RAFAEL TORAL SPACE PROGRAM WORKSHOP: Rethinking Electronic Music
Rafael Toral calls his playing style “post-free jazz electronic music”,
once described as “a brand of electronic music far more visceral and
emotive than that of his cerebral peers”. Toral’s Space Program delivers
music that is full of clarity, articulating silence and sound in a
thoughtful, yet physical way. A long time collaborator of Sei Miguel, he
has performed throughout Europe, Canada, USA, South Korea, Japan, New
Zealand and Australia, released 13 albums and produced the first Anthology
of Portuguese Electronic Music. He is a member of MIMEO orchestra.
http://rafaeltoral.net
Electronic Music development has historically been mostly oriented to the
sound source (technology) and the object (finished work). Unlike in jazz,
the individual is rarely the focal point. More concerned with the musician
than with the instrument, the Space Program is Rafael Toral’s long-term
research into human performance possibilities in Electronic Music, a
fundamental reevaluation of its conception, performance and experience.
The Space Program Workshop shares some concepts, focusing on how we make
performance decisions. Aimed at musicians using hacked, bent, or custom
electronic instruments, it raises fundamental questions about what can we
do with them. The Workshop provides participants with conceptual tools for
structuring musical discourse, with emphasis on phrasing from Space
Program’s viewpoint.
The workshop has the duration of 4 days and covers topics like:
1. Matter: Instrumental choices and interface optimization.

What is required :
- The Space Program Workshop has to do with electronic instrument control.
Your instrument absolutely needs to be able to instantly start and stop
making sound.
- It is aimed at non-conventional electronic instruments that require a
physical interaction. No keyboards. No classic instruments. No computers
(except with gestural controllers).
- Previous hacking workshops and basic electronics knowledge are preferred.
- It’s about simplicity. Be prepared to focus and simplify your sound.
- A small mixer if you have several sources (your output should be one
channel).
- Headphones (and your own monitor circuit, mixer, etc., if necessary)
What is offered :
- Focus on your instrument technique and choice of sounds to perform.
- Structure your sounds, establishing a personal lexicon.
- Exercise an articulated way of listening and dealing with silence and
“space”.
- In short, to develop a physical, organic, elemental approach to
electronic music.
