Dear list,
weird thing is happening with my GUI on ubuntu 16.04 pd 0.49.0 64 bit If I open pd from terminal, the last letter is missing in each object which has no arguments. Like loadbang is only loadban, pix_video is pix_vide and so on. If I open the patches running pd from its icon, or from the launcher, the GUI works fine.
Is it a known issue?
Best,
Popesz

i remember this problem from a while ago. i don't remember the root cause nor the solution.
in the meantime: could you check the output (on the terminal) of the following command (when the problem occurs) and how it relates to the missing characters.
$ pd -d 1 2>&1 | grep pdtk_text_new

Iohannes,
here you are: puredata -d 1 2>&1 | grep pdtk_text_new pdtk_text_new .x564181da2850.c {.x564181da2850.t564181d16850 obj text} 39.000000 36.000000 { } 10 black pdtk_text_new .x564181da2850.c {.x564181da2850.t564181d16850 obj text} 39.000000 36.000000 {loadbang} 10 black pdtk_text_new .x564181da2850.c {.x564181da2850.t564181d97cc0 obj text} 303.000000 146.000000 { } 10 black pdtk_text_new .x564181da2850.c {.x564181da2850.t564181d97cc0 obj text} 250.000000 124.000000 {gemhead} 10 black
both are shown as [loadban} and [hemhea] on my GUI

Iohannes,
I come back with the topic of the missing last character in objects and messages. Do you have any solution for it, or should I live with it. :(

this is pretty weird.
the only possible reason i can think of why this would happen is, that you are using a newer version of Pd-GUI (>0.48.2) with an older version of Pd-core (<=0.48.2).
this might have happened if you
AND
newer Debian (and ubuntu) packages (starting with 0.49.0-2!) have supposedly fixed this issue, by applying more restrictive dependencies.

You are right sort of this happened what you described, but no system upgrade just 0.48 installed from the ubuntu software installer and 0.49 was compiled from source. After a fresh install all works fine as a charm.

so you had both Pd-0.48 (from ubuntu) and Pd-0.39 (self-compiled) installed simultaneously? in theory they shouldn't conflict.
the ubuntu-packaged version should live in /usr/lib/puredata whereas your self-compiled version should live in /usr/local/lib/pd. did you play with the installation target?
fgasdmr IOhannes
no, did not play with the install target, and yes each was installed in the mentioned folders.

I mentioned in an other topic on this list that from the terminal with the command pd it did not open with an error like this" /usr/local/tcl//pd-gui.tcl that TCL could not find no such directory, as it pointed into a wrong path with a double slash after /tcl
however from the desktop clicking on the icon could open it without any problem.
the command 'puredata' in terminal caused the above mentioned missing last letters/numbers in each message, object or symbol etc

and how did you launch Pd?
- using the desktop-menu?
- running "pd" from the terminal?
- running "pd-gui" from the terminal?
- ...?
