Yes, I think that's the reason.

I'm a big ALSA fan, but both of this isn't true. You can get low
latency with OSS as well and PD works just fine with OSS. Running off
a CD is a lot worse latency-wise.

Throwing away OpenOffice and installing PD and some other soundapps on
it wouldn't be that hard.
I'll take a closer look at how to customize Knoppix the next days and
will report here. Probably customizing is easier if one is running
Debian, because that's the base for Knoppix, and I am running Debian.
