HI all, in the 0.25 pre-release (NT only!) the "-adc" flag has been renamed "-nodac" and the "-dac" is now "noadc,", contrary to the usage message that "pd -help" outputs. On SGI I've only compiled Pd for "o32" so far (my SGI machine is 5 years old!) and would like someday to put out an "n32" version which would run quite a bit faster. I would suggest leaving "pd-gui" in o32 so that it works with TK, and only compiling "pd" itself with n32. The two only communicate via sockets and there's no need for them both to be n32. cheers Miller

Gem 0.77 on IRIX

hmmm, curve and polygon dont seem to work on my machine..... they show up but without the input... so I cant use them. Anybody else have this problem? also, can someone send me an example of how to use scale? I cant seem to get it right. also, is there a way to do warping on a 3D object? like in the IRIX midiblob demo.... also, how can I draw a simple line in Gem... Scale accepts a message with 3 floats which specify the X, Y, and Z scaling of the transformation matrix for the chain. This means that if you pass it 1. 1. 1. nothing would happen. Setting a scale == 0. is undefined by the way...but it will probably do what you expect it to do. The best way to deal with a blob effect is to specify all of your coordinates and draw the triangles yourself. Make certain that you get the newest drivers from the Creative web site. This could very easily be your problem. NT, Soundblaster and Me.

Hello there. I'm a student in the UCLA Design department and am trying to incorporate voice and tonal input to a real-time 3D environment and am having some trouble getting PD to operate under NT. I have installed PD .24 on a machine with a Soundblaster AWE64 card and have gotten MIDI to work just fine, but when I start PD I get a message that says "error: dacs died: switching to another timing device" I have looked at the device list but I don't understand how to alter settings, etc. Also, I am wondering if anyone has experience using PD with a Soundblaster LIVE card: PD crashed on me everytime when I installed one but I wonder if there are config modifications that can be made to PD or the SB drivers to avoid this. I am not a programmer, and I only understand the wonderful world of NT to a limited degree, but I will try anything you can think up. Thanks! damon seeley

gem 0.79 for WinNT

GEM 0.79 is out for WinNT. As mentioned yesterday, it fixes a variety of issues and includes a new particle system. As a general rule, the release notes are the closest thing to a manual right now. Make sure to look through the previous entries to see if your question is answered. Also, the MarkEx library is now a part of GEM. Things means that if you have the MarkEx library, you don't need to use the -lib command with pd anymore. There are a bunch of useful objects in there, especially for doing GEM work (like vector manipulation) I changed how some of the low-level viewing works, but it shouldn't have any visible effect on anyone. Please let me know if any patches break. I hope to have the SGI version on-line by the end of the week. I will check it out tonight and make sure that everything is cool. For those who are interested, the new release of GEM has a full particle system in it. The system is extremely powerful and flexible, so I'm sure that the current interface via GEM is useless. But, the more people hammer on it, the better it will get. Hopefully the release can happen in a day or so... Also, lighting is actually useful now...there were some conceptual bugs in the code. Hi all, I've put a preliminary "test" version of Pd 0.25 out for the NT platform only, so that Mark and I can check that we're in sync. I'm folding in Winfried's multichannel extension in parallel; should have that out also in "preliminary" form in a day or 2. I haven't documented any of the changes yet; mostly I've been working on timing in NT and W98; there's also a "pipe" object as in Max. Miller

shot self in foot

Hi Pd-ers, For you non native English speakers, shooting yourself in the foot is a methaphor, meaning that you pulled the trigger on your pistol before you took it out of the holster. Here's how I just shot mine: NT Versions of Pd through 0.23 have a file, pd.dll, which "externs" link into. In version 0.24 I renamed this "pdlib.dll" to avoid confusing the Gates debugger. However, I just realized this morning that this change BREAKS ALL EXTERNS. The only people I know of who are impacted are myself and Mark Danks but there may well be others. I'm busy now trying to put out a release 0.25 mainly to fix problems in the 0.24 release... Should I leave "pdlib" the way it is in 0.24? The SGI release 0.24 is in trouble too. Somehow the object files got compiled non-optimized so that 0.24 is about 1/2 the speed of 0.23. Oops... Miller

There's a simple granular sampler in 4.dsp.examples/09.sampler.pd and 4.dsp.examples/10.samp2.pd ... the next patch, "11.samp3.pd" is something different. cheers Miller
