MIDI specifications for Multidimensional Polyphonic Expression (MPE) in Pd

some new objects for MPE Midi is on Max's new update, just googled it to see what it was http://expressiveness.org/2015/04/24/midi-specifications-for-multidimension… wonder if you guys know anything about this and if anyone would be into bringing this to Pd. cheers

William Brent's [convolve~ ] dekenized

Hey For those interested: I took the liberty to package William Brent's [convolve~ ] external and make it available through Deken. [convolve~ ] does real-time partitioned convolution where the partition size and thus the resulting delay can be set. http://williambrent.conflations.com/pages/research.html Roman P.S.: Didn't have the chance to test on macOS. The "GUI faking" works at the moment and it's fast. I'm less inclined to believe adding a webbrowser layer and in-app socket communication is going to be performant on mobile devices. Even if we have 100 Ghz, native (iOS CoreGraphics, etc) will still be faster. What I *really* want is to simply ditch the GUI implementations and receive drawing commands directly from Pd. It could be "line here, rectangle there, text here" as it is now or it could be higher level as in "toggle here, object there" etc. If there was an abstraction layer replacing the TCL (maybe it looks/works like TCL in the end) wrapping the GUI, it would simply be easier to let Pd itself handle the logic and we just feed it input events. I know the Purr Data team have worked this out, so maybe we can look at there model or think of something at a different level. I have some ideas and, after having dug into the GUI code to fix zooming/sizing, I know there isn't really that much raw drawing TCL in the core. And most of what's there is pretty simple and repetitive. At this point, it would be great to solve this problem that preserves vanilla stability *and* provides for expanding GUI possibilities. How to implement an @ argument in an external object?

Being informed about the mailing list archive correct link, I searched for messages about this but didn't find something (it's possible I've missed something though). I'm writing an external and I want to use an @ argument (for example "@sync hard"). How does one implement this in C code?

"too many open files" error in 0.48.1

In 0.48.1 on Ubuntu, I'm getting a horrible scenario where PD refuses to open patches or create any more abstractions for me. I get an error message saying "too many open files". Granted I have a lot open, but this is a serious problem as it means I can't access all of my old performances. They worked fine in 0.47. Any ideas? Liam

intelligent patching

just a minor announcement. recently there was some momentum on github about streamlining the patching process when it comes to connecting many objects, or objects with many iolets. it all started a while ago (at least for me) with my "doublechord" plugin (available via deken), which allows you to extend additional connections between an object with many outlets and an object with many inlets that are already connected, without having to fidget with so many iolets. indendently, manav rathi submitted a PR to allow connecting of two selected objects with a keystroke. after that people joined in and started to suggest all kind of improvements, as seen in purr-data or max/msp. si i backported some of the connection tricks from Max and Purr-Data, and it all ended in a PR [374]. new connection features: - select any two objects, and press <Ctrl>+<k> (or <Cmd>+<k> if you insist), to connect them (trivially, so just the first iolet) - to connect a (signal) outlet to multiple arbitrary inlets, you can now press <Shift> while hovering the yet-unconnected cord over an inlet - to add more connections between two already connected object, select the connection and pressl <Ctrl>+<d> to extend the connections to the right ("duplicate") - to fully connect two objects, *select* both objects before connecting them. - to connect multiple objects to a single inlet, select all the source objects (but not the sink object) before connecting them. - (the other way round works as well, but will give you fan-outs!!!) - to connect multiple objects to a multi-inlet object, select all the source objects *and* the sink object before connecting the leftmost source to the leftmost inlet. - to connect a multi-outlet object to multiple objects, select all the source object *and* all the sink objects before connecting the leftmost outlet to the leftmost sink. i think that's about it. thanks to Jonathan, Dan, Alex & Esteban for the inspirational ideas. some of thew new features make it incredibly easy to create fan-outs. urgh!!! so this is another opportunity to announce my "triggerize-plugin" which will turn all your buggy fan-outs into nicely triggered connections (and much more). grab it from deken. of course this is just a pull request, so we depend on miller to merge it into the "master" branch ;-) gfmasdr IOhannes [374] https://github.com/pure-data/pure-data/pull/374 [triggerize]

There seems to be a bit of FUD in this "discussion." Some things from my perspective: 1. Pd's library/path mechanism is largely oriented toward *local* libs first and *global* ones later, ie. download externals to individual project (sub)folders. I believe the centralized loading was added later on in Pd-extended. If we follow the "programming language model", this might be similar to installing a Python egg locally or globally. I don't see how supporting both modes of working is a problem. 2. IOhannes convinced me, over time, that the "stdpath" loading mechanism used by the "extra" folder is problematic as it adds too many (sub) search paths by default and it becomes harder to tell/control what's being loaded. The "better way" is for people to specify those externals paths directly, either with the user search paths and/or declare. There is much less ambiguity as to what's going on at the loss of "just put things in this place" ease. 3. As suggested by Alexandre, I wrote a PR to help address how declare search when using -path & -lib by having them search along user search paths as well: https://github.com/pure-data/pure-data/pull/205 <https://github.com/pure-data/pure-data/pull/205>. I feel this is a much closer method of using declare to how other programming languages handle such things, ie. Lua's require. 4. The Pd Documents path (aka ~/Documents/Pd) is simply a helper location for beginners. It is only a regular user search path added by default (when desired) and does not search subfolders. Nobody has to use it and it can be disabled at any time. 5. Yes, the macOS hiding the ~/Library folder is problematic for many users as they don't know how to show it and are afraid to modify things within it. I've recently taught classes to beginners that are just learn gin the concept of a "file system" as they grew up mainly using "mobile phones" ... Plus, ~/Library/Pd was also a "kitchen sink" std path with the issues listed in #2. 6. I've attempted to provide some solutions to various issues outlined over the last year regarding [declare] and folders. It would be helpful to get more feedback earlier on in testing / experimentation, rather well after a release. OTOH if I attempted to do work for free on Pd that pleased *everyone*, I suppose I wouldn't bother. (7. Out of curiosity, does the autotools build work as well? Blackmagic Deck Link Duo + Gem

Dearest Gem devs sorry for cross posting pd+gem I try to work with a Blackmagic DeckLink Duo 2 with 4 separate SDI inputs on OSX. I have problems selecting the individual video streams. With [pix_video] the [device <nr>( message does not give the expected results -> the cameras won’t open. Does any of you have any experiences with this (or similar) hardware?? best, jonas

It would relatively easy to add a right outlet to [random].
