Hey Budi,
I couldn't find a binary to download there, looks like its only the
source.
I was just messing with linking to the libraries to test out a new
idea to make it much easier for users to install. Using the
@loader_path trick, we can include the libraries in the fux_kinect
folder, and allow it to work anywhere, not just /Library/Pd. I'm
nailing down the script now, then I'll post it.
Sofy, see if this works for you (re-download this): http://autobuild.puredata.info/pdlab/fux_kinect.tar.bz2

Ok, I updated my library embedding script and made a test build of
fux_kinect. It seems to work for me. Here are the patches that I
needed to do to get things working (you can apply them with 'git am'):
Then I can just "make deploy" and it'll build everything and include
the libraries. The 'fux_kinect' folder can then be dropped into ~/
Library/Pd or into a project folder, and you can create [fux_kinect].
To make a downloadable version, the whole fux_kinect folder can just
be zipped up and put on the github downloads folder.

I don't know a lot about the C++ name mangling (i.e. names like _ZN7GemBase11setModifiedEv), but I know that when building objects for Gem, you have to build against the same version that you are running it with. You cannot build against say 0.92 and run the object with 0.93. When do you, you get errors about things like _ZN7GemBase11setModifiedEv.

Someone was working on fux_kinect for GNU/Linux, I forget who, but I don't know how far they got. It would be good to have. Its probably just a matter of getting the compilation right, since libfreenect and Gem both work well on GNU/Linux.

Ok, I updated my library embedding script and made a test build of fux_kinect. It seems to work for me. Here are the patches that I needed to do to get things working (you can apply them with 'git am'):
Then I can just "make deploy" and it'll build everything and include the libraries. The 'fux_kinect' folder can then be dropped into ~/Library/Pd or into a project folder, and you can create [fux_kinect]. To make a downloadable version, the whole fux_kinect folder can just be zipped up and put on the github downloads folder.

You're not telling the whole story. If you have an undefined symbol then the thing doesn't load, so, it can't crash.
So, how did we resolve the undefined symbol issue so that it was able to at least crash ?

Following your suggestions on irc, I removed a few OSX specific things from the Makefile, and replaced some things by "-shared "or so... (thanks for the help by the way, and sorry that I forgot to mention it was with your help that I got it to build in the first place, I didn't mean to steal any credit :) ) That 'undefined symbol' thing probably happened now only because I was trying with a new build of latest Gem, which doesn't seem to work itself here. I now replaced it back with my previous Gem.pd_linux, and it behaves like before: I try to create [fux_kinect], and pd hangs, without ever finishing creating the object, and without messages. I could probably look up the Valgrind output, if it's relevant. gr, Tim

If you need to know what CFLAGS and LDFLAGS you need for a given platform, check out the Makefile template, they are all in there, laid out by platform.

You could use the « svn diff » command, or if it's not from SVN, then unpack another copy (make sure you don't overwrite) and then do a diff of the two Makefiles with a command similar to :
diff -u fux_kinect_orig/Makefile fux_kinect_tim/Makefile
if the newer lines appear as «-» instead of «+», you have to change the order of filenames (I get it wrong 50 % of the time)

You can use gdb like this :
gdb --args pdextended fux_kinect-help.pd
and then use the «run» command to start pd, and press Ctrl+c to force it to quit when it's hung, then use the «where» command to see a backtrace. Then post the backtrace here.

For a hang, it's better to use GDB.
GDB and Valgrind are largely complementary.
There's also a GUI for Valgrind if it helps you. I don't know about GUIs for GDB (except the quite old DDD), but there might be one or several.

I don't really remember the steps exactly, do you?
You could use the « svn diff » command, or if it's not from SVN, then unpack another copy (make sure you don't overwrite) and then do a diff of the two Makefiles with a command similar to :
diff -u fux_kinect_orig/Makefile fux_kinect_tim/Makefile
if the newer lines appear as «-» instead of «+», you have to change the order of filenames (I get it wrong 50 % of the time)
That 'undefined symbol' thing probably happened now only because I was
trying with a new build of latest Gem, which doesn't seem to work itself here. I now replaced it back with my previous Gem.pd_linux, and it behaves like before: I try to create [fux_kinect], and pd hangs, without ever finishing creating the object, and without messages.
You can use gdb like this :
gdb --args pdextended fux_kinect-help.pd
and then use the «run» command to start pd, and press Ctrl+c to force it to quit when it's hung, then use the «where» command to see a backtrace. Then post the backtrace here.

Well, you're lucky, because it crashes really quickly after the bug :
#7 0xb42514da in freenect_init () from /usr/local/lib/libfreenect.so.0.0 #8 0xb43824cf in fux_kinect::fux_kinect (this=0x8612638, argc=0, argv=0xbfffec4c) at fux_kinect.cpp:84
This (and the Valgrind report that you didn't post) all point to the first half of the fux_kinect constructor. I just tried reading it for the first time. It contains the line :
gl_frame_cond = (pthread_cond_t*) malloc(sizeof(pthread_mutex_t));
but the size of a pthread mutex is either 24 bytes or 40 bytes (32-bit vs 64-bit), and the size of a pthread cond is 48 bytes (though some bytes might be unused in 32-bit mode). This causes memory corruption in the next line already :
pthread_cond_init(gl_frame_cond, NULL);
So the fix is to use pthread_cond_t in the malloc call above.
But a better fix might be to not use malloc at all for those things, unless there's a good reason to use it. Less opportunities for bugs.

also, new/delete makes it unnecessary to force pointer casting, and if you don't try to force it, then the compiler will complain about the bug (trying to assign a cond pointer to a mutex pointer variable).

A nice idiom for malloc is to use the sizeof of the target of the pointer to which you are assigning its result (no explicit cast needed when assigning from a void * afaik, at least no warnings/errors here with gcc (Debian 4.4.5-8) 4.4.5):
$ gcc -std=c99 -Wall -pedantic -Wextra -Wno-unused-parameter
-o malloc malloc.c
#include <stdlib.h> struct foo { int bar, baz; double quux; }; int main(int argc, char **argv) { struct foo *f = malloc(sizeof(*f)); free(f); return 0; }

assumed to be mistakes ;
problem we have here is because the wrong type name was typed in a sizeof. If a wrong type name can be typed there, so can a wrong variable name.
Therefore, either use «operator new», or if you're stuck with C, use a macro that does the job for you :
#define NEW(T) ((T*)malloc(sizeof(T)))
so that if you do a wrong assignment, you will get an error for it :
struct foo *e = NEW(foo); struct foo *f = NEW(typeof(*f)); struct bar *g = NEW(foo); // wrong struct bar *h = NEW(typeof(*f)); // wrong
error: cannot convert ‘foo*’ to ‘bar*’ in initialization error: cannot convert ‘foo*’ to ‘bar*’ in initialization
But anyway, those mallocs in [fux_kinect] are superfluous because you can reserve that amount of RAM directly in fux_kinect by removing the «*».
That goes for nearly any struct that you need to create at the same time as another struct, and destroy at the same time as that same struct, and never need to change the size of. In order to do that, you need to be able to init and finalise separately from malloc/free. That's why the function is named pthread_cond_init and not pthread_cond_new, for example.

The valgrind log (in the terminal) also ought to tell you an «Invalid Write» error with a partial backtrace. This is the error message I told you to give to the author, and even though it might not crash, it's still usually a sign of major problems.
Whenever you have a crash while doing malloc/new, hunt down the Invalid Writes that you see and it will usually fix the problem.
If it doesn't fix the problem, then it's because there are other Invalid Writes that valgrind couldn't detect.

Hi all, I tested with fux_kinect and a kinect connected now. Some results: on the first test, fux_kinect-help.pd opens and the depth image appears, though with some glitches/flickering (scrambled frames now and then) The tilting also works. Upon closing the patch, pd crashes. On a second attempt (after this crash), the help patch freezes instantly. Only the first frame of the depth image appears, and then pd hangs. Attached is the output of "valgrind --leak-check=full pdextended" and opening fux_kinect-help.pd. Let me know if there's any more useful info I can produce. gr, Tim

I think that you better not add --leak-check when just looking for a crash. But the only problem it does, is make the log file bigger.
Here's what I found (summarising the important error messages) :
Invalid write of size 1 at convert_bayer_to_rgb (in libfreenect) by [...] by libusb_handle_events_timeout (in libusb). Address 0xa066360 is [between 0 and 5] bytes after a block of size 307,200 alloc'd
This means that when libusb gives libfreenect the RGGB buffer and libfreenect is converting it to plain RGB, it makes a mistake and writes 6 bytes more than just 640*480 pixels, as if there were 2 extra pixels at the end. But I think that this is a bit misleading. It looks as if Valgrind was skipping a lot of other errors (probably by not able to detect them). Read on.
Then there is invalid write of size 1 from the same place but « Address is 749 bytes inside a block of size 12,800 free'd ». This doesn't look like any malloc that we know about. The number of bytes does not ring a bell either. But then it says that the memory was freed by request of /usr/lib/nvidia-current/libGL.so.270.41.06, which is a part of your video driver. (???)
But I just looked at how convert_bayer_to_rgb is written, and it doesn't look like it writes to more than one buffer. This function only writes 480 rows of 640 columns. But note that it writes RGB values, three bytes per pixel. That means you need a malloc(640*480*3) for each of the three RGB buffers in fux_kinect.

gem v0.93 is needed! but there is a binary available now anyway so you don't have to get yourself in trouble compiling it for osx on your own.
there was a problem with the path settings in the dylibs. try it again, i hope it's working now.
I also tried compiling pix_freenect myself, but got stuck at: "In file included from pix_freenect.cc:23:0: pix_freenect.h:38:31: fatal error: libfreenect-audio.h: No such file or directory compilation terminated." pix_freenect readme says: "get and install latest libfreenect from https://github.com/OpenKinect/libfreenect (compile with Audio support!)" libfreenect readme says: "Audio is currently being worked on."
yes, audio is being worked on by the libfreenect team, but in the latest version from git it is included and ready for use. i didn't have enough time to test audio under osx so it won't be included when building pix_freenect for osx. (it was quite unstable when i tried it) now it won't search for libfreenect-audio.h while compiling for osx.
for audio i think i will divide the external into two anyway. one for video, one for audio. i will have to check it out if it's working simultaneously for one kinect then.

hi tim, have you try the latest version of pix_freenect by matthias?
Hi Budi and list, I tried pix_freenect.pd_linux, but unfortunately: "pix_freenect: can't load library" No idea why... I'm running GEM: ver: 0.92.3. Is v0.93 a requirement maybe?
gem v0.93 is needed! but there is a binary available now anyway so you don't have to get yourself in trouble compiling it for osx on your own.
there was a problem with the path settings in the dylibs. try it again, i hope it's working now.
Has the Linux version been updated as well? trying the binary from http://www.matthiaskronlachner.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/pix_freenect_0... with the following setup now: GEM ver: 0.93.3 compiled: Nov 11 2011 0.43.1-extended-20111114 Ubuntu 11.04 (so not 11.10, problem?)
/usr/lib/pd-extended/extra/pix_freenect.pd_linux: can't load library
gr, Tim
I also tried compiling pix_freenect myself, but got stuck at:
"In file included from pix_freenect.cc:23:0: pix_freenect.h:38:31: fatal error: libfreenect-audio.h: No such file or directory compilation terminated." pix_freenect readme says: "get and install latest libfreenect from https://github.com/OpenKinect/libfreenect (compile with Audio support!)" libfreenect readme says: "Audio is currently being worked on."
yes, audio is being worked on by the libfreenect team, but in the latest version from git it is included and ready for use. i didn't have enough time to test audio under osx so it won't be included when building pix_freenect for osx. (it was quite unstable when i tried it) now it won't search for libfreenect-audio.h while compiling for osx.
for audio i think i will divide the external into two anyway. one for video, one for audio. i will have to check it out if it's working simultaneously for one kinect then.

to my embarrassment I notice that I didn't even change the first lines:
# change to your local directories! PD_APP_DIR = /Applications/Pd-extended.app/Contents/Resources PD_DIR = /Users/xcorex/Documents/Documents/Projects/Puredata/PdSource/Pd-0.42.5-extended/pd GEM_DIR = /Users/xcorex/Documents/Documents/Projects/Puredata/PdSource/Pd-0.42.5-extended/Gem
but it built anyway. Does that mean it found what it needs regardless of those lines, or that my build is just some sort of dummy altogether? Tim
if the newer lines appear as «-» instead of «+», you have to change the order of filenames (I get it wrong 50 % of the time)
That 'undefined symbol' thing probably happened now only because I was
trying with a new build of latest Gem, which doesn't seem to work itself here.
I could probably look up the Valgrind output, if it's relevant. gr, Tim
For a hang, it's better to use GDB.
GDB and Valgrind are largely complementary.
There's also a GUI for Valgrind if it helps you. I don't know about GUIs for GDB (except the quite old DDD), but there might be one or several.

What has a conflict with libfreenect? I am pretty sure that fux_kinect uses libfreenect. Is the version in Ubuntu too old? That's a possibility.

In all likelihood, the memory corruption problem comes from [fux_kinect] even though it is triggered in libfreenect. Now if Tim and Budi try a malloc of the correct size, then it wouldn't damage malloc() own database, and it wouldn't make malloc() crash in libfreenect.

you can see in the Makefile that PD_APP_DIR is only for «make deploy», PD_DIR is only used to find .h files (and to find .dylib files, but I don't know why), and GEM_DIR is only for the .h files.
So, if you have already copied Gem's headers into your build folder, and m_pd.h is already in /usr/include, then it does not need those variables at all for just doing «make».
