Hello,
I look for a cheap camera (< 200 euros) with a Firewire 800 interface. I would like to use it for fiducial tracking. The camera would be attached to the ceiling and connected (with a 10 m cable) to a Mac Mini. Do you know the existence of such a camera ? Thanx. ++

Thanx Luiz, i know PointGrey and i think (tell me if i'm wrong) the price of these cameras is > 400 euros and i need a camera with a price < 200 euros. Do you know an other site with smaller prices ? ;) If someone has already used a good webcam with Firewire 800 interface, i'm a buyer :) ++

Any FW 400 cam is supposed to work with a FW 800 port with an adapter cable.

Hi all,
Jack, did you check the prices? The usb cameras used to be cheap ~ 200 $
jaime, I was thinking about this camera....Can you give more impressions about it? Have you tried to exploit the potential fast response in higher frame rates?
Best

jaime, I was thinking about this camera....
well, the thing is that it is a really cheap camera to try out, it works almost immediately (at least in linux and in osx up to 30fps (although there seems to be some patching to the macam driver to do more...))... I would just get it and try it. the worst thing that could happen is that you have an extra - kind of interesting - cheap webcam.

is it really USB 2.0 ? virtually any usb camera i checked advertises itself as USB 2.0, though the few ones i tried are actually using 'only' UHCI (which refers to USB 1.1). i guess, what the USB 2.0 label on those cameras means is the fact, that they are compatible with USB 2.0 capable ports.
in case you are on linux, could you post the relevant past few lines of dmesg after having plugged in the camera? if this is really a USB 2.0 camera, i might be interested in purchasing one.
cheers roman

hi,
I'm on the road and need to turn on my machine this week. so I'll send the dmesg printout then.
you can find more information on the driver and other people's experiences in: http://kaswy.free.fr/?q=node/42 and http://nuigroup.com/forums/viewthread/4079/P15/ there must be a lot of dmesg prints there...
I have gotten it working with no p[roblems or crashes in fedora11 at 320x240@75fps and 640x480@60fps, higher frame rates are not working ok, dropping frames everyonce in a while. the driver seems to be in a testing period though, so i'm kind of skeptical...
there is also some stuff on the web about using other lenses and taking the ir filter...
best,

Thanx Jaime and Frank for informations about the PS3 camera. I have bought one (39 euros) and it works perfectly with [pix_video] and [pdp_v4l2] but not with [#camera] (pd crash). My configuration : Ubuntu 9.04 Pd version 0.41.4-extended GEM: ver: 0.92.CVS
I will try later on MacOSX. ++
