Dear List,
i wish to connect a simple 3-switch foot-switch to Pd, and i was hoping i could do it with [comport], but when digging into it, i got slightly disheartened... can you help me how to do this, at least with 1 switch, without building some complicated interface? It's not a pedal with pots, just "push-buttons" (not even real switches which would stay on or off).
Thanks, Andras
[key] / [keyup] and hack an old keyboard ? I've been using this for quite a while: http://www.timvets.net/music/egi/EGI_timvets.jpg gr, Tim

Looks cool! thanks for the idea, i think i'll give it a shot. If, however, anyone knows how to recieve an 5v undefined-length impulse with [comport], with little hardware fuss, i'm still interested.

Do you happen to have a parallel port? for some reason I think it would be easier to use directly than a comport...
for example: http://www.mail-archive.com/pd-list@iem.at/msg05283.html
using the parallel port: you need the external zexy ftp://ftp.iem.at/pd/Externals/ZEXY , which contains the object [lpt] to get acces to the parallel port. on linux, you need to be root to get permissions, on windows you need to installl something addidionatlly (have a look at the helpfile of [lpt]).

You should be able to read both the DTR and CTS lines by repeatedly banging the [info( message into [comport] and routing the "dsr" and "cts" messages that come out the right outlet. Also if you set the baud rate really low and send 5V through about 1kohm into the Rx pin with the switch connecting it to ground, you should get some random data out of it.

When I needed a bunch of footswitches, I hacked a EUR 10 game controller and replaced the button contacts with large jacks for plugging in keyboard sustain pedals, along with the [hid] object. Very reliable!

So did I. You should be aware that reading data input from a game controller requires the [hid] object, which currently only works in Linux. There's always [hidin] in windows, but it's much less reliable. Also, if you plan on using pots in the future, be aware that cheap controllers often have cheap "analog" pots which may turn out to be quite unusable in Pd.

Thank you all for the ideas! I think i'll try [lpt] first and see if i get input. (btw, OT: do you guys remember the COVOX 'sound card' for the LPT port? 8 resistors...) Then i'd go for the hacked keyboard thing - i remember a recent thread about how to attach a 2nd keyboard, with some xorg.conf hacking... but i couldn't find it.
I don't need pots at this time - for that job i used a PIC and MIDI. I'm also also on Linux so everything just works :o)
