Thank you all for the ideas!
I think i'll try [lpt] first and see if i get input. (btw, OT: do you guys remember the COVOX 'sound card' for the LPT port? 8 resistors...)
Then i'd go for the hacked keyboard thing - i remember a recent thread about how to attach a 2nd keyboard, with some xorg.conf hacking... but i couldn't find it.

I don't need pots at this time - for that job i used a PIC and MIDI.
I'm also also on Linux so everything just works :o)

So did I. You should be aware that reading data input from a game controller requires the [hid] object, which currently only works in Linux. There's always [hidin] in windows, but it's much less reliable. Also, if you plan on using pots in the future, be aware that cheap controllers often have cheap "analog" pots which may turn out to be quite unusable in Pd.

When I needed a bunch of footswitches, I hacked a EUR 10 game controller and replaced the button contacts with large jacks for plugging in keyboard sustain pedals, along with the [hid] object. Very reliable!
