What is the best recipe for low latency, using a laptop with no ieee1394 (firewire) and only USB under Windows or Linux? Metastudio 4 for Pure Data - coming soon!!
Linux-wise, quick pointers:

Not my MOTU :) I've tried FFADO but thanks for the reminder anyway. The previous "firmware" MOTUS definitely work on Linux, not Ultralike Mk3 still. The latest report (very recent) is [1]

There is a report that the Ultralite Mk3 and the Ultralite hybrid (in firewire mode) are mostly working. The 828 Mk3 streams audio for most combinations of optical port mode settings (although some are yet to be tested). The Traveler Mk3 streams audio at all sample rates so long as the optical ports are turned off. Work is continuing on making the optical port support better on the G3 devices which have optical ports. ffado-mixer currently does not work with any G3 models. *The protocol is pretty well understood; I'm hoping to find time soon to start adding this to ffado.*

My MOTU is not USB. I have firewire (only) version of Ultralite, the hybrid USB/firewire is recent, very recent.
Additionally, MOTU complicates mapping of features, code of multitrack driver, and so forth - better understanding is at FFADO - I'm no expert/nor-even-amateur at this. It is not trivial USB audio driver, its THEIR driver. Once you get a MOTU you have to use their driver for YOUR system, and their's no Linux drivers, they don't give a damn (see official MOTU responses and foruns). Thus, I will never buy MOTU again because thy maintain a hostile policy against Linux/open source :) <- personal choice.
H2 is cool. Just like h4, except If i'm not mistaken it actually is a 4 track recorder (soundcard) while h4 is bogus 4 track, only 2 channels at a time.... haha.
My H4 was really cheap, so I don't regret it.

It is not a dream, it depends on the hardware and its standards compliance. Roland/Edirol stuff is great. I have a UA-25 usb external that I have not had any trouble with and I've read the FA-66 firewire version works with the new firewire drivers. The problem is related to proprietary this and that in the drivers of some manufacturers. You can't expect decent drivers in Linux unless they are willing to give out the details and MOTU is apparently not.

Are you sure you really get 24 bit duplex? I don't think USB 1.1 has enough bandwidth. I was burned during a show at STEIM by accidentally switching the advanced switch on and the USB bus threw a kernel panic as soon as I hit a song with an [adc~]. Took me a while to figure that one out.

So theoretically it should ... but I also have a usb-midi converter, keyboard, and 2 gamepads on the same bus. In my case at least, it seems 24 bit at full duplex is too much for the bus controller on my machine, while 16 bit full duplex is fine. At least thats my experience in practice with the UA-25, not the UA-25 EX or whatever the new model is called. I use it with Advanced Mode off.
Anyway, Ed I'd say check out the FA-66, see if you can borrow one to double check that the linux firewire drivers are working, whatever the name for the latest firewire audio drivers are.

Well...herein lies my problem. The computer has no Firewire connection and no PCMCIA slot - so no FA. I have an FA101 (which nearly torched my set entirely in Sao Paulo with Ubuntu) but the computer I was using got stolen, and my newest and best comp has no Firewire, and so it's USB only for me!
Ironically, since I am now using Pure Dyne, the FA101 would probably work, since the whole system is optimized to run PD/SC/Audio
A friend of mine has the UA-101. I'll see if that works OK with Jack before I buy anything.
PS has anyone tried one of the Lexicon USB sound interfaces with PD rt linux?

Well, I got the UA-101 cause I heard that the Edirols are perfectly supported (btw the FA-101 with FFADO is working flawlessly). However, it turned out that up to the previous alsa, it wasn't supported, and when it did in the latest alsa version, playback was corrupted (not recording!) due to some internal working of the card. The latest driver (separate module than snd-usb-audio module) fixed this issue and the card is working now, however at least for me it loses connection to the device randomly, after 1 min or 1 hour of operation. Not exactly ready for live performance...

well, try it. All USB audio devices have the same (driver) latency, so any will do as far as latency is concerned.

Especially "options snd-usb-audio nrpacks=1" can be useful. USB audio on Linux can give you pretty nice latencies with a rt-kernel. Instead of Jack, it may also be good to try "-oss" or "-alsa". In my (a bit old) experience, -oss worked better than -jack.

Well, there is a standard for usb 2.0 audio devices AFAIK, but no device implements it, they all use their own proprietary stuff which makes Linux support diffictult, to say the least. For USB 1 the standard was widely adopted and works very well on Linux (some say better than on Windows).
