Hi all,
I'm recieving data via bluetooth from a Muse EEG headset and trying to route it into Pd-Extended.
[dumpOSC] is working sometimes but tends to crash Pd when the whole stream is on.
[udpreceive] seems a lot more stable but is having trouble with data types and seems to require | [unpackOSC] to interpret the data but that object is filling up the console with this error:
*unpackOSC: PrintTypeTaggedArgs: Type tag said this arg is a string but it's not!*
Does anyone know if there is a way to fix this error? I guess there's an unexpected data type being generated by the EEG headset? Other than the error it seems to work pretty well this way.
Thanks Richie

That error was being generated when new messages were arriving at [unpackOSC] before it had finished with the previous message. A newer version of [unpackOSC] is in the sourceforge svn repository at http://sourceforge.net/p/pure-data/svn/HEAD/tree/trunk/externals/mrpeach/osc...
It may work better, but it sounds like you have a lot of data arriving very fast. Does it still give errors if you send less data?
Martin

i'm curious how this could possibly happen. even if the data was sent super-fast, once a list of bytes comes out of [udpreceive], Pd will not allow another list to come until the downstream [unpackOSC] signals that it has done it's work (by returning from the stack).
A newer version of [unpackOSC] is in the sourceforge svn repository at http://sourceforge.net/p/pure-data/svn/HEAD/tree/trunk/externals/mrpeach/osc...
which fixed a re-entrancy problem, which is not the same as "fast data" (although re-entrancy happens in zero-logical time).
doing a quick check of the code, the error should be thrown if the OSC-message contained an "invalid" string, e.g. one that contains weirdo characters or is not properly zero-padded.
@richie: would it be possible to get the OSC-message (as byte-list) that generates the error?
something like the output of the following patch:
[udpreceive 7777] (change the port to yours) | [t a a] | | | [print raw] | [unpackOSC] | [print osc]
this will potentially flood the console even more, but just a few lines of output should be sufficient.

Thanks for all the advice. Yes I agree David the Muse software is very buggy.

Maybe I'm missing something but it seems odd to me that the "raw" data is almost exactly the same each time.

i'm curious how this could possibly happen. even if the data was sent super-fast, once a list of bytes comes out of [udpreceive], Pd will not allow another list to come until the downstream [unpackOSC] signals that it has done it's work (by returning from the stack).
A newer version of [unpackOSC] is in the sourceforge svn repository at
http://sourceforge.net/p/pure-data/svn/HEAD/tree/trunk/externals/mrpeach/osc...
which fixed a re-entrancy problem, which is not the same as "fast data" (although re-entrancy happens in zero-logical time).
doing a quick check of the code, the error should be thrown if the OSC-message contained an "invalid" string, e.g. one that contains weirdo characters or is not properly zero-padded.
@richie: would it be possible to get the OSC-message (as byte-list) that generates the error?
something like the output of the following patch:
[udpreceive 7777] (change the port to yours) | [t a a] | | | [print raw] | [unpackOSC] | [print osc]
this will potentially flood the console even more, but just a few lines of output should be sufficient.

no, that's fine. there are mostly numbers, and OSC needs only four bytes for a long number. the "same"ness you see is mostly the boilerplate code for the OSC-path.
anyhow, i don't see any error messages in this, am i missing something? (what i actually wanted was one of the messages that triggered that "unpackOSC: PrintTypeTaggedArgs: Type tag said this arg is a string but it's not!" error)

Good point IOhannes. I think the problem was that I just took too small of a sample to see the error return. The culprit seems to be /muse/config see below. Maybe there is a way to filter out those messages?

Thanks for all the advice. Yes I agree David the Muse software is very buggy.
@IOhannes here is the ouput of your patch (there's a lot more this is a small excerpt):

Maybe I'm missing something but it seems odd to me that the "raw" data is almost exactly the same each time.
no, that's fine. there are mostly numbers, and OSC needs only four bytes for a long number. the "same"ness you see is mostly the boilerplate code for the OSC-path.
anyhow, i don't see any error messages in this, am i missing something? (what i actually wanted was one of the messages that triggered that "unpackOSC: PrintTypeTaggedArgs: Type tag said this arg is a string but it's not!" error)

Good point IOhannes. I think the problem was that I just took too small of a sample to see the error return. The culprit seems to be /muse/config see below. Maybe there is a way to filter out those messages?
Yes that's what I thought after looking at the docs. Config is a really long string, it may be too long for the default buffer in unpackOSC.
You can tell museIO to send the config to another port or not at all.

Thanks Martin,
I've been trying to work out the syntax of how to turn on and off specific OSC paths to deal with this error but also for efficiency as I won't be using everything at once and I'm trying to run three headsets at the same time on different ports. I can't make much sense of the documentation in terms of the actual commands to use.

Could you please also send the "raw" data that triggers the error (actually this is all i wanted from the beginning: the list of bytes triggering the problem)

The raw did not trigger an error. But I may have tracked down the problem! It's not just the OSC objects but [route]
[udpreceive 5010]
|
[t a a]
|
|
| [print raw]
|
[unpackOSC]
|
[route /muse]
|
[print osc]
I put some [spigot]s in to test the two [print] streams together and separately.
The error does not occur reliably until [print] comes out of [route /muse] but this is the way to get all the good data out.
But then when [print raw] stream is also on the error *does not* trigger.
Seems odd behaviour.
Is there a way to filter some data before [route]?
Ok further testing and error is still triggering while the raw is printing. I still think it's related to [route] though. But maybe this will help?

The raw did not trigger an error. But I may have tracked down the problem! It's not just the OSC objects but [route]

| [print raw] | [unpackOSC] | [route /muse] | [print osc]I put some [spigot]s in to test the two [print] streams together and separately.
The error does not occur reliably until [print] comes out of [route /muse] but this is the way to get all the good data out.
But then when [print raw] stream is also on the error *does not* trigger.
Seems odd behaviour.
Is there a way to filter some data before [route]?
THe first error is triggered in [unpackOSC] with a string that's 738 characters long. I think that's the problem. I guess somewhere in unpackOSC a buffer is too small for it.

Actually it's because the string is terminated with an ASCII Carriage Return (decimal 10), which is not allowed by the OSC spec, so it gets rejected.

THe first error is triggered in [unpackOSC] with a string that's 738 characters long. I think that's the problem. I guess somewhere in unpackOSC a buffer is too small for it.

Sorry, Line Feed, is ASCII 10.

...although OSC 1.0 says that any sequence of non-null ASCII characters can be a string. The unpackOSC implementation may be rejecting it because Pd doesn't like such characters in its symbols.

Indeed, the ASCII 10 character seems to be causing the error message of [unpackOSC]. However, Pd deals with such symbols just fine, it seems. Try this:
[10 ( | [makefilename %c] | [symbol this$1isa$1symbol$1with$1line$1breaks( | [print]
The OSC specifies OSC-strings as follows (from 1):
"OSC-string: A sequence of non-null ASCII characters followed by a null, followed by 0-3 additional null characters to make the total number of bits a multiple of 32."
There is no mention of disallowing newline characters.

Yes it's odd. I don't know where that came from. I can change [unpackOSC] (and probably [packOSC ] as well) to conform to the spec. Are there any ASCII characters which are forbidden in a Pd symbol?

none. there are a few that are hard to create on a Pd-side (e.g. "\n"), and there is the infamous 123 (aka "{") which freezes the pd-gui when being displayed, but that is not a limitation of the Pd symbol.
so i think that you shouldn'd do any filtering on the packOSC/unpackOSC side (that is: i would even allow UTF-8, at least on the receiving side¹)

¹ and probably on the sending side as well; though you might turn this on/off with a special message (and make the default ASCII only)
I have encountered a number of problems with the Muse software. It seems that they pour most of their development resources into their assisted meditation Apps and that the backend they provide for general use are fairly buggy. If in fact your hypothesis is true, you may need to write a python script (or some such thing) to pre-process the OSC messages and repackage them into the correct data formats that Pd's OSC externs expect.
I've also seen dubious timestamp information coming off of the Muse OSC streams, so be careful if that information is important to you.
Cheers, David

Hi all,
I'm recieving data via bluetooth from a Muse EEG headset and trying to route it into Pd-Extended.
[dumpOSC] is working sometimes but tends to crash Pd when the whole stream is on.
[udpreceive] seems a lot more stable but is having trouble with data types and seems to require | [unpackOSC] to interpret the data but that object is filling up the console with this error: / unpackOSC: PrintTypeTaggedArgs: Type tag said this arg is a string but it's not! /
Does anyone know if there is a way to fix this error? I guess there's an unexpected data type being generated by the EEG headset? Other than the error it seems to work pretty well this way.
Thanks Richie
