hi,
I've guessed from messages on the list that gem can handle video capture and video files. I'm not too sure, is that right ??
I wanted to check this out, so I downloaded gem 0.84-6 and compiled it on my RedHat 7 / Xfree86 4.1.0 / Mesa 3.5 system.
Then, I tried to open the gem examples but, for any of them, and whatever DISPLAY is set to ( localhost:0, 192.168.6.2:0, :0 ), I always get the following error when I try to create a gem window :
#################################################
Pd version 0.34 TEST 7 compiled 17:38:23 Aug 30 2001 ... GEM: Mark Danks GEM: ver: 0.84-5 GEM: compiled: Sep 6 2001 error: GEM: Could not open display ,] error: GEM: Error creating const context error: GEM: A serious error occured creating const Context error: GEM: Do not continue!
#################################################
It's not the common DISPLAY problem, ( I did the "xhost +" even though I don't have to do it, the X server has been started as root and I'm running PD as root ), so I think there's some incompatibility with latest XFree and Mesa.
If gem can handle video, this can be worth digging ... If it doesn't, that's just a bug report.
cheers,
Yves.

hi yves
that's right, you can capture video. for the gem error: have you tried to continue? i had the same problem with similar setups (rh7/7.1, mesa 3.1/3.4/3.5?, XFree3.3.6/4.0/4.1). it works, though, at least it did for me. only X was pretty hard on the cpu. yes, it seems to be some kind of incompatibility. might be some strange redhat issue.(?) tried for weeks to solve it, to no avail. then i switched to debian... works fine now. sorry, that's the only "advice" i can give. and, unrelated to the gem error, you should get rid of the test version, pd 0.34 is out and rocks.

hi,
thanks for your hints, you're right, gem works if you ignore this message which seemed to me as a fatal error, but, no, after that, it "somewhat" works.
I say it "somewhat" works because many examples won't load due to various problems :
( must be a compilation problem )
anyway, I've got the answers I wanted on gem's capability regarding video, so, thanks again.
cheers,
Yves Degoyon.

2 are not "many", are they ?
- missing venus.obj for many examples
just copy it ... anyhow, on my workstation, either pd/gem keeps segfaulting when trying to load a patch containing a model, or no model will be visible (so this is a bug, and may concern günter, as i do not remember it, appearing under windos)
- it doesn't find "pix-movie" object
( must be a compilation problem )
read "pix_movie" instead of "pix-movie" anyhow, pix_movie is not supported yet under linux; günter did something similar on gem-0.85 supporting an mpeg-player, but he never released it properly.

:) Yes, right model loading stopped working .. well I didn't change anything, so there is a problem is a problem with Mesa/OpenGL compatibility.
I simply couldn't find the time to debug the problem, I don't know the code that well that is involved with the object loading, it could be as well a problem with the library Mark used for object loading, so actually we should use another library, that supports more formats, and sort of redo the whole thing.

That was at a point when it wasn't possible to have gem externals, I wanted to stop hacking the stable base of Gem.
Still, here is the external ... ftp://xdv.org/pub/gige/gem/pix_movieQT-0.1.tar.gz it supports a few Quicktime codecs, and depends on quicktime4linux.

on iem's ftp-server still those unstable prereleases with pix_movieQT support can be found at ftp://iem.kug.ac.at/pd/Externals/GEM/LINUX
speaking of gem-0.85 what's the difference between linux-gem-0.84 and win-gem-0.85 (apart from the platforms) ? why not getting in sync (and if it was only for the version-numbers) ?

I get the same message and yes it works, but as soon as you destroy the window, pd crashes. I think it has something to do with the GL/Mesa libs which are included in XFree86 4.1.0.

hi,
i think most of your problems arise because u have no direct rendering. u have to use an opengl card with dri support like matrox g400 etc.. u can find the supported cards + more info at dri.sourceforge.net.
once u have a working dri environment gem should load without the "could not create context blah .... " (i dont have the correct error in my mind).
with the commandline command "glxinfo" u can look up if u have direct rendering or not.

sorry, no.
my card has direct rendering, all mesa demos work fine. it's an Acer Lab Aladdin i1 chipset which does graphics and audio.
the problem is that it's the latest release of Mesa ( 3.5 ) and Redhat 7.
and although you get this error, some gem examples work afterwards.

i have this same problem, but i AM using direct rendering, with an ATI card, using X4.1... i have tried gem on-and-off for quite a while across many machines and I don't think i've ever had a configuration that didn't crash when i shut windows.
my current configration gets the 'could not create single buffer window' error. if i don't use single buffer mode, it works fine except for the instabilities when closing windows... so, i have to save, very often :)

hmm i have no explaination 4 this. - maybe guenther or mark has. as soon as my dri was working (matrox g400 and later nvidia gforce 2 gtx pro) i had no problems anymore - if not to say it was "extreme" stable :-) .

i have dri enabled. i even thought that might the cause of the problem, as i didn't have it before, but i don't feel like switching back to xf 3.3.6. my card (banshee) is supported.

speaking of my own configuration, ( the card is a Trident Cyberblade AGP ) they recommend to activate dri in the kernel to make it work, so I think it is definitely supported by the hardware.
Maybe, the driver or Mesa can't handle it ??
With Direct X, all tests succeed.
What's that tinkering I've heard of ??
