Hey all,
I just quickly banged out a little hack to make Cmd-Click toggle
editmode on the Mac. This is how it works on Max/MSP and it's a
handy shortcut. It would be trivial for me to add this to Windows
and GNU/Linux using Ctrl-Click.
Yes or no? What do you think? Any potential problems?
(I know on Mac OS X, Ctrl-Click is mapped to right-click so that you
can get the properties/help menu using a one button mouse).

Why not, as long as ctrl-e still works as well? I can't think of any problems from my end since ctrl click doesn't do anything on linux I don't think. Maybe some people will think this is an instance of feature creep though.
I am really digging the changes you are making to the interface, the vera sans font layout in particular. My little dream right now would be a partnership between desiredata and pd extended, as implausible as that might sound - has the thought ever crossed your mind for a future release? Just thought I would ask ;)

In my experience, ctrl-click on linux allows you to change values of sliders, number boxes, toggles, bangs, etc... without leaving edit mode. It is really useful to have this function, rather than replace it with editmode-toggle. Chuck

That is definitely useful, and something that is missing on Mac OS
X. I wonder if it would be useful to have it toggle editmode only
when you Ctrl-Click on the background canvas (and it toggles rather
than choose editmode).
Hmm, maybe I should make Cmd-Click behave like Ctrl-Click does on GNU/ Linux...

Hi Hans,It is not missing! It works as control-option click (and control-shift click for fine values). Definitely not documented though :); I found it by searching after I heard someone mention that terribly useful shortcut. I made a post a month or two ago about it.
Command might be friendlier, though.

It would not be hard to make a desiredata-extended, it would be a
matter of the DD devs working with me to get things building. I can
help them if they are game, but I can't do it myself.

yes I can't think of any time when edit mode doesn't call for immediate mouse use. Personally my fingers are so clumsy, ctrl-e and ctrl-w are often too close for comfort. Hans-Christoph Steiner wrote:

After using the Max/MSP style Cmd-Click mapping, I found it
annoying. So I switched Cmd-Click to the Pd Ctrl-Click behavior.
It's included in the latest Pd-extended builds.

command E / ctrl E, which i have always used, is weird now on osX .
for a start, you have to actually move the mouse to see the cursor change from an arrow to a hand.
also, if you use command E with the mouse clicked (when selecting objects for edit), then command E is double triggering.
i could possibly get used to the new command click method, but just want to let you know that this change has broken the existing command E function.
my vote is a NO for command click unless the original command E function works properly again.
hey i find ctrl clik on linux very nice :) i will test it with osx soon and let u know how does it work i had also meny time problems with E and W being 2 close and the S is also not so far :) my vote is yes for ctrl (cmd) click.. nikola

I found the Max/MSP style Cmd-Click to toggle edit mode quite
annoying in Pd. So I switched it to the Pd-style Ctrl-Click. Cmd-
Click now allows you to interact with GUI objects when in edit mode.
I think this makes the most sense.
Any objections?

control click on OS X has always been used to bring up the [properties/open/help] dialogue.
command (applemark) E has always been standard for edit mode.
personally, i'm finding the command-click function really annoying, especially when used in conjunction with other command functions (cut paste etc)
but if you change it to control-click, what happens to the [properties/open/help] dialogue if you are not in edit mode?

Have you tried the Cmd-Click that mimics the Ctrl-Click on the other
platforms? The Max/MSP style Cmd-Click is quite annoying, but I
think the Pd style works nicely.

Ctrl-Click is the Mac OS X standard for right-click with a one-button
mouse.

Hello Hans and list,
Will control-click -toggle- editmode (on and off), or only -activate- it, so that once you're in edit mode you can still use control-click when you want to click a messagebox without leaving editmode ?
