hi,
is there already any way of having a backslash in a message (box)? i
found some ancient stone carvings about that issue (pd-list 2002).
miller said back then:
Good idea... Maybe, just "addcomma" would be best. I'm against adding a general escape mechanism, because I think it's better to find a design that obviate teh need for it...
http://lists.puredata.info/pipermail/pd-list/2002-10/008321.html
well .. actually if pd does not escape i got to escape for myself.
that means that i need to find a replacement character for \ in order
to translate it then back to . if i take # as replacement and
someone facing the same problems takes § then we end up with a lot
more mess than using the backslash in pd can result in.

i think there are tree solutions:
cheers ... tim
4th solution:
define an environment variable in your startup script. just type a line like this:
set BSL=\
you can now call this environment variable by typing %BSL% in any pd-message, where internally it will be replaced by good old . i had some fairly good szccess with that method when it came to dynamically defining paths with pd messages

i think there are tree solutions:
- recompile pd and define GG_ESCAPE_HACK (not portable)
- use python/ruby instead of pd for handling control data (not pd)
- wait for 10 or 20 years (takes time)

seems to work on windoze only ... couldn't reproduce in on linux ...
i think, i found another bug, though ;-)

what exactly is not portable with that solution ? Just curious,

well, if you write a patch on a pd compiled with GG_ESCAPE_HACK, it won't work on a pd, that's not compiled with GG_ESCAPE_HACK...

as clearly stated in my mail, that's a quote from a message by miller
from 2002. see the full text here:

i would love to learn, too

Well, I believe that there is no such design that can really obviate the need for a general escape mechanism.

Hi there,
Well, I believe that there is no such design that can really obviate the need for a general escape mechanism.
well, yeah. what about unicode, btw? After all, we are not living in the 1990s anymore ...
with kind regards, thoralf.

How about _strings_ too? we are not living in the 1950s anymore... :-)

well... use a professional programming language, if you need strings ... your answer would be ruby, kjetils answer would be scheme, my answer would be python

well, maybe you have to think about that for another ten years ... perhaps you find a design ... if not ... think about it for another 10 years ...
iirc it took more than 500 years after the fibonacci numbers has been defined to find a direct (non-recursive way) to compute elements ... how long took it to prove fermat's last theorem?
maybe there is a superior design, that will be thought of in 30 or 300 years ... still, i'd prefer a non-optimal solution until then ...

Fibonacci hasn't defined the Fibonacci numbers. He imported them from the Arabs, who already knew about them and their appearance in biological patterns; but I think I recall that they actually had learned that from some other people. I think you can date it back to year 800 or before.
But then, there weren't people actually looking for a "non-recursive way" for 500 years in a row non-stop. It's not like DeepThought taking 7500000 years to answer "42" you know. ;-)
Plus, which definition of integer multiplication do you use that doesn't use recursion at all? :-P
... how long took it to prove fermat's last theorem?
350 years. (How is this related to backslashes anyway?)

How long did it take to invent Object-Oriented COBOL ?

not at all ... i'd just propose, we try to find a non-optimal solution, since, rather than offering no solution at all ... i don't think, pd is a program to develop / prove concepts of computer sciences, but a tool to create arts (well, i thing 99% of the users use it this way)
