The test release is using an embedded Tk 8.5.19, hence it looks a little different. However, you'll also notice it's now crisper as it handles retina rendering...

Ok, that's because I was experimenting with flags, like "verbose", and also "Use standard extensions"... with the latter unchecked, I learn that you can't load help files.
But there's still the other thing I said, that it still "looks weird"

Actually, you're probably referring to the too-thin font rendering with Monaco on retina screens. I agree it's not very readable.
@Miller, can you look into including DejaVu Sans Mono with the OS X release? It *really* fixes this. There is a "dejavu" branch which only includes the font, no metrics changes.

yup, not very readable... :/ it's thin and small and more less spaced
now, how come when I build it myself from https://github.com/pure-data/pure-data it is just fine?

Regarding how it looks, seems more like the "lesser of two evils" for me, but it would still be an issue. But now I don't even know if I was checking the real thing when I built it... maybe it looks great and not too different than 0.47, plus it makes the font issue consistent between platforms (but not windows yet, right?).

If you change the log level to "all", you can see the TK version print to double check.
Don't build with "make app", use the app scripts directly "make app" builds with the old TK 8.4 that is included with the Pd sources.. There is *tons* of info in mac/README.txt...

Yes, that's why I test with multiple builds. Now you're starting to see what I mean by giving up some things looking "exactly" the same in a cross platform program...

Yeah, I never doubt that things are more complicated than I assume. But I'm just really curious and hope to grasp at least the gist of it.
Seems like we've had problems before just by changing the Tk version, someone just mentioned that around here.

Is this compatible with leaving the default font weight bold? That also corrects the too-thin text. I find in general having default font-weight bold makes it possible to read everything from further away and/or in more crowded patches.

Hmm, I'm confused now. Well, it was never bold in mac, so maybe the
question is if the branch. And, if anything, maybe the branch sets it to normal, while currently it is bold for linux/windows.

I'm working on the branch update, in the meantime see the font/README.txt: https://github.com/pure-data/pure-data/tree/dejavu/font https://github.com/pure-data/pure-data/tree/dejavu/font
It *will* be cross platform. If it's not detected, the current defaults are used as before.

Ok, it's ready: https://github.com/pure-data/pure-data/pull/42/files https://github.com/pure-data/pure-data/pull/42/files
Branch overview:
The current platform default font weights remain and DVSM is set as default font for all platforms. If it's not found, fallbacks are Monaco on macOS & Courier on Windows (current behavior). DVSM is included with the Pd sources in the font directory and is bundled into the macOS Pd .app by the osx-app.sh script. It is not installed to the system on any platform. We need some further work for it to be included with Pd on Windows, but that can be done in a future PR.

Yeah. I need it for libpd as devices can run at differing sample rates and I don't want to have to hard code that when using samples.
I brought his up as a suggestion a year ago and decided the other night just to see if I could make it work.

Hey Max,
I compiled jack2 with current master (9c929bef39e1, which is probably the one they use in KXStudio) and compiled Pd against this new jack. I also get segfaults when running Pd with -rt. The backtrace looks pretty similar to yours. As you already reported, other Jack clients run fine.

The backtrace says it, but I'm not knowledgeable enough to interpret it.

I can't really tell. I tend to think it may require a change in Pd, but that's just an uneducated guess.

Hey Max,
I didn't know KXStudio. I will be pleased to help you to debug but i am too short to do it at the moment. I am sure that you can count on lot of people of this list to find where is your problem. On my machine, it is not perfect, I also get :
$ pd -jack -channels 2 -rt Cannot lock down 1186 byte memory area (Operation not permitted) Cannot lock down 82274202 byte memory area (Operation not permitted) Cannot lock down 422 byte memory area (Operation not permitted)
But Pd and jack seem to work fine together.
When i wrote "compile with jack", i wanted to say "compile with jack support". ++
