Zitat von Luisa Lamas luisalamas@hotmail.com:
Hi list,
I download gem-bin-0.90.1, extract and I have two files: one (gem.dll) and another readme.txt. I put the file GEM.DLL on the gem folder.
you can put the gem.dll whereever you like, but you have to start PD with a batch file and the correct -lib flag in order to load gem.
suppose you have PD in "C:\audio" and the gem folder is a subfolder of PD, the batch file should be like this:
C:\audio\pd\bin\pd.exe -lib C:\audio\pd\gem\gem
ciao
oliver
Am I wrong ? Have I done the right download? Hope so,...
If anybody knows I thank an answer

But I have the gem-0.87 already installed I suppose that I must install the previous one the gem-0.90.0 and then the upgrade for gem-0.90.1 is only one file (gem.dll). Am I correct ?
Sorry I have fear to do mistakes and have to begin all the extras and libraries that I have installed...
ok, sorry for being so cryptic
when you download the "full" version of Gem (without sources, for windows) you will get a Gem.dll and some folders with reference-patches and other documentation (example patches) up till now, Gem is only an external library, it has no abstractions (this will most probably change in the future)
so to run gem-0.90.1 it is sufficient to have the correct Gem.dll if you want the documentation too (while the functionality has not changed, almost all of the reference-patches have been rewritten for 0.90) you will need to download it.
so in short: 1.) you need the Gem.dll (if you are on windos) for 0.90.1 2.) you might want the optional documentation
caveat: there is no bundle that consists of both the 0.90.1-binary and the documentation
so what to do:
install it by hand:
http://gem.iem.at/download/gem-doc-0.90.0.zip
of course you are free to get the bin+doc-bundle http://gem.iem.at/download/gem-bin-doc-0.90.0.zip install as instructed then replace the 0.90.0 Gem.dll with the 0.90.1 one
sounds complicated ? probably it is......

prize question: what would be the free windows installer of choice ?
What about the Nullsoft installer? ( http://nsis.sf.net ) What's the prize?
all the best, Thomas

hmm, i haven't thought about this yet. as you are the only candidate right now, i'll rather wait for some other days, to give other people the chance to submit their answers. we'll see them

I would recommend Inno Setup ( http://www.jrsoftware.org/isinfo.php ).
I looked at a bunch, including Nullsoft, when I did the Pd installer
for Windows and chose Inno. It works quite well and behaves just like
a native installer. Nullsoft's is a bit odd.
But even better than making an installer for Gem would be to
incorporate Gem into the Pd installer for Windows. Then you would not
have to answer all these tech support questions like "where should I
put the dll?", "how do I set up the path", etc. etc. It would just be
there.
The Inno Setup files are in CVS under packages/win32_inno
.hc

hi! i want to make a patch that generates non-sense random words. Do anybody have tried that in pd? any hint about doing this would be appreciated.

[random] ?
what do you mean by "word" ? numbers, just alpha-characters ?
[makefilename %c]
of course i would use some zexy objects like [l2s] and [repack], but i am sure, that there are other ways...
any hint about doing this would be appreciated.
i have another hint: when you start a new thread, please start a new thread and do not kidnap another one.
my mailer shows this email in the thread of "Gem-bin-0.90.1" is there any connection ?
i mean, it is not that hard to send a "new" email to "pd-list@iem.at"; you don't have to reply to some unrelated mail.

why don't you attack a dictionary site with a random number?
but, ok, that's another random project...
sorry, sevy
re,
I read:
hi! i want to make a patch that generates non-sense random words.
you mean random strings that could be words of some natural language or random sentences from predefined words, or just random strings ?
any hint about doing this would be appreciated.
depends on what you're after but I'd probably choose a different tool than pd for most of the above.
regards,
x
i mean random strings , for example: lkjasdsad ñlkeiufncv aoiunf lfiojh alksklj ... it doesnt mind if its not a word of some natural language.
;)

moin pun chik,
i have several patches that do this -- one perl-based system that communicates with Pd via either OSC or netsend/netreceive is available at:
http://www.ling.uni-potsdam.de/~moocow/projects/saywhat/
the other system has dependencies about 5 levels deep, and as I haven't gotten around to cleaning up my patch library yet, hasn't yet been published -- they're basically just hacks that generate phone strings for use with ratts.
another (better) way to do this would be to use Markov models:
http://www.ling.uni-potsdam.de/~moocow/projects/gfsm
http://www.ling.uni-potsdam.de/~moocow/projects/pd/pd-gfsm-0.02.tar.gz
... of course, before you can use them you need to define your model, but that should be relatively straightforward (train it on letter sequences)...
