I really do enjoy the layout on the Processing site (http://processing.org/), since it is very clean and has lots of pictures and a big fat examples section on the front page. If we are trying to market Pd to new users, this is THE most important thing (as previously asserted).
I also enjoy their utilization of subdomains. We could do this with things like http://gem.puredata.org, http://gridflow.puredata.org, http://pidip.puredata.org, etc.
Also, it would be best if the forum was attached to the main website by at least a prominent link/redirect, if not actually in server space. But we definitely need more pictures: unless you're trying to show off by running lynx, the internet is not a purely textual medium. Besides, the people who actually DO patch Pd without a GUI probably aren't so interested in visiting a more marketing-oriented site anyway. Maybe we could do http://nogui.puredata.org?

We're actually looking for a graphical redesign for the pd.info page for quite some time. A nice Pd-Plone skin is what's needed. There were people promising to do something about it, but that was months ago and will probably not happen.
So if anybody wants to contribute a Plone Skin: you're very much welcome to create one.

Will a Plone skin do what Kyle suggests? I'm really into the
underlaying idea present in Kyle's suggestion, not so much for the
graphical changes, but for the structural changes.
PDDP is more then unifying the looks of the help-patches and
developing the interactive tutorial. I very much agree that it is a
very high priority, and am really grateful for the work being done -
no doubt. But with the current discussion on the subject of the
website and PR, it would be great to see work done to re-structure
it, such that new users by the hand of a transparent angle can be
guided into the land of Pd.
I also know, that things only get done when people voluntarily
actually do it (as in any anarchistic environment). Therefor, though
i can't promise it, i will see to make a prober proposal for such a
change. Much will stay the same, as the present documentation of the
Pd scene isn't done by fools, most sertanly the complete opposite,
but i think i have quite unspoiled eyes, to see where changes could
be to the better, as i have done very little work in Pd and therefor
don't know very much.
Now; would it be welcome?
Best, (another) steffen

I think, this is a great idea, and an outside view (spoiled or not ;) is good to have.
Everyone who wants to get more involved how the website should look like and be structured should probably subscribe to the pdweb list: http://lists.puredata.info/listinfo/pdweb
Also check out the prior postings there in the archives to get a feel for what was discussed already. However this may spoil your view, so feel free to do this later.

Hello;
Here are some of the topics that I think it would be useful to have
available on the website:

page is Miller's book!)
How does this list strike other people? I've tried to keep sort-of
within the boundaries of the current website structure.

Another cool thing that we should add is a section for completed works: mp3's/ogg's, mov's/avi's, etc. I really am inspired when I watch things like the Henry Bros doing insane physical modeling a/v stuff in real time on a video. This is also nice because you don't have to share your "secrets," but can still let people see what is possible with Pd.
Every senior list member should be responsible for showing at least one super bad-assed creation on the website to boost newbie morale.

the mailing list turns into a bit of a pissing contest sometimes.
How can we improve this situation and make the list friendlier?<<
i don't think it really needs to get friendlier. just maybe direct newer people to the forum~ cos it seems to be a better place to ask basic patching queastions.

in my humble opinion, if the pd-list has no room for that, which i
think it should, then a novice list would be appropriate.
i see no reason, why not all questions could be asked in this list. i'm against any unjustified separation between noobs and proofs.

i really agree with roman here. what is the separation about. i think that one who really is in close touch with the programm and knows a lot about it can be of excellent help to people who are new, if they feel humble enough to talk to each other...and people who are completetly new may post questions nobody has ever thought of.

I also think that we should not have separate lists for noobs and
profis. But I do think we should have a webforum. Many people only
use webforums, so I think that such people should also have a place
to discuss all things Pd.
If the puredata.hurleur.com forums are working that's fine. If
someone is willing to set up forums on puredata.info, then I think
that would be better, so we have everything on one site.

I like that idea, a gallery section on the front page and a really
easy way to post to it would be a good way. Like the processing.org
stuff on the left side of the page.

http://puredata.org/docs is a wiki, so please add to it. All those
sound like good ideas. That stuff could probably use some
organization also. But just make sure to communicate on the pdweb
list before doing big changes.
Also, I think it works if we delegate sections to people. I
currently work on /dev/ and /docs/developer/ I have been doing most
of /docs/, but I'd happily give up some of that.
