Related to a question someone just asked:
How exactly does one control the appearance of GOP subpatches in the master patch? I always end up with sliders stuck together and overlapping on my master patches...
Thanks, David
P.S. : I'm recently getting back into PD/GEM in a more serious way, so be expecting to get a lot of questions from me. I'm hoping I don't have to end up resorting to Max/MSP + Jitter, but still some things I need seem missing. Of course, one issue is no [hid] [pdp] or [pidip] on Windows ... if there was a SIMPLE and audio-ready Linux install I could use just for PD as a second OS on my laptop I'd consider it, but my past (bad) experiences installing Linux have not made me too keen on trying this...

Ay there's the rub ... I only JUST got Hans installer working with GEM and all the externals for the first time. I could never get things to work correctly before, and I'm deathly afraid of breaking it ... I believe that is PD-0.384.
Can I install the new PD over top without losing all my libraries and externals and the nice documentation, which while it has gaps, is far better than anything that existed before.
I'm on Windows XP, and I really don't wish to break this now that it works for the first time in a year and a half...

It usually works OK if you add the path to your existing libraries and externals to the new pd, if the new pd is not installed but just put there. e.g. I have pd039_2_test7 from Miller's site in C:\pd_039 while the installed version is in C:\Program Files\pd. As long as I don't double-click on a pd patch I can use pd_039 with the libraries from C:\Program Files\pd\extra.

Well, I hope to start generating 0.39.2-extended builds in about a
month or so. Any help is always appreciated, and will make things go
quicker.

Like IOhannes says, 0.39 is a _way_ big improvement for GOP, but if
you're on 0.38 (because hc's installer is awesome) you should check
out Frank Barknecht's "GOP done right":

Have you tried DeMuDi recently?

Or Chun Lee's pd-gop at: http://goto10.org/-/pdgop.html for a deeper explanation.
However if you have you read this and if you tried once how immensely more useful GOP became in pd-0.39 you'll never want to look back. Add to that the [list] object which was also new in 0.39 and I can only recommend to upgrade. And if you intend to use data structures, that's a third argument for upgrading or at least installing pd-0.39 in parallel.
At least you should not waste too much time in understanding how GOP worked in Pd versions < 0.39, it totally changed for the better.

Hi,
Well, I just tried the new PD, but I can't tell any difference. I guess I'm missing something?
On the other hand, I used your tutorial with the 0.384 and it worked GREAT!

Okay, never mind, I see it, but I don't understand how to make it look good ...
Also, as I thought, PD 0.392 can't see my libraries. I put them in the Path, hit "apply" and "save settings" ... Nothing. But the 0.384 library runs fine. This is what I get:

No the path looks exactly right! I copied it straight out of the 0.384 dialogue. It's stuff like this that makes me feel stupid and frustrated. It should work, but... ?
The path looks like this: "C:/Program Files/pd/extra/cyclone" ... and that is where the library really is at, so I can't understand the problem. I will try rebooting just in case that makes some difference.

Bad news!!! :(
Now, none of the libraries load, except GEM, xsample, and pmpd, into EITHER version of PD (384, 392), even though they are in different places in my Program Files folder. I did not change 0.38.4, but somehow it has picked up the problem from 0.39.2. I tried to reinstall 0.38.4 and it didn't make any difference either.
In 0.38.4, when I open the "Paths", the paths all look correct, as I didn't change them. HOWEVER, when I try to open the "Startup" dialogue, NOTHING HAPPENS. So, obviously there is some problem here - is there some kind of external file that I could fix with a text editor???
I'm very frustrated. Especially because, we are starting Chicago PD meetings and I could probably make some cool stuff to share and bring some more people into using PD, but not if I can't get it to work!!!

Unfortunately for everyone pd messes with the registry in Windows, if you run regedit and look in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE->SOFTWARE->PD you will see among other things a bunch of paths which seeme to be the ones used in the dialogs. I have no idea what is safe to change in there. I hate the registry, so I'm biased.

Just delete all the Pd entries. I think you can just delete HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE->SOFTWARE->PD in one step using regedit. To run regedit, just type the name into "run program". Then Pd will run like new again :)

After installing Pd-0.38.4-extended, you can double-click this file to
reinstall the library loading:
C:\Program Files\pd\pd-settings.reg
This will import the settings into the registry.

Hi, I should have remembered that I had to do this before! Thanks everything is fixed and works great again.
And, I finally got around to trying the PMPD examples and they are amazing, I'm so excited to develop some patches with these. I promise to share some with the list, and also do my best to document a little what I do to help other people learning. I know it's so hard starting out, I gave up 3 times with PD before I started to figure it out enough to enjoy it!

hi david
may you know it already, but i tell you nevertheless. there are two way to tell pd which pathes to use and wich libraries to load and so on. if you set your pathes using the userinterface (File -> Path or File -> Startup), pd will save these settings in the registry. the comfort (or the crux) of this story is, that these entries will stay there if you install another version of pd, so you can use the same settings in the freshly installed version. the other - the oldschool - way is to write startup-file. it is a normal textfile with the ending .bat (on windows). you can call it 'pd.bat' for example and place it in the pd/bin-folder. these file could look like that:
pd -path c:/pd/extra -path c:/pd/your/abstraction/folder -lib zexy -lib c:/whole/path/toyour/lib
personally i like more the way with the bat-file, because it provides more flexibility. you can use more than one file for different settings (no libs, all libs, all libs+gem etc.). if you decide to write your own .bat-file, i recommend to delete all settings in the registry in order to not mix up these two (as miller mentioned). a detailed descripton of how to write your own .bat-file will you find in: pd/doc/1.manual/x3.htm#4 (section 3.6 'command line arguments') i hope i could help you.

Except for Gem, you need to turn those loadlib statements into path
statements. They are in libdir format, which currently is only
supported as a lib in Pd-extended. In Miller's Pd, you need to add to
the path instead.

... if there was a SIMPLE and audio-ready Linux install I could use just
for PD as a second OS on my laptop I'd consider it, but my past (bad) experiences installing Linux have not made me too keen on trying
this...
A [hid] port to Windows is underway. I could whip out a [directinput]
object if I had a day behind a windows machine (I currently don't have
one but will have regular access to one soon). A [hid] object is going
to be more complicated because of Microsoft's characteristic arbitrary
limitations.
As for pdp and pidip, I think it would take a couple days to port it to
Windows using MinGW. That's just a guess. I'm not going to do it
myself anytime soon, but I can give assistance. And lots of people
would be happy to have it working on Windows.
