My system: Pentium 150, 32 MB of RAM, AWE 64 Gold. Please tell me if
this setup is too slow.
PD by itself is slow but it runs. From what I understand, to start GEM
I click on the Start Menu, Run, and type:
D:\pd\bin\pd -lib /pd/gem/GEM
or create a shortcut and type the same in the Start In value.
The location of the startup files in my system are:
D:\pd\bin\pd
D:\pd\gem\GEM
What happens is that only the MSDOS window will appear for a split
second then close. Is there a …
[View More]trick to specify the drive the library is
on? Other comands I tried:
D:\pd\bin\pd -dac -lib /pd/gem/GEM
D:\pd\bin\pd -nosound -lib /pd/gem/GEM
D:\pd\bin\pd -adc -lib /pd/gem/GEM
D:\pd\bin\pd -lib D:/pd/gem/GEM
D:\pd\bin\pd -lib D:\pd/gem/GEM
I tried moving everything (PD and GEM files) to the C Drive. The
command line:
\pd\bin\pd
would work for PD, but not:
\pd\bin\pd -lib /pd/gem/GEM
What am I missing, please stop me from shopping for a G3.

Hi,
I have just startet using PD and GEM, but I also also had the same problem - and solved it. It seems, that the PD commandline parameters are case sensitive (!!!!) In my case it works fine if I type:
pd -lib /pd/gem/Gem
(with an uppercase G)
Remember to put both the 'pd' and 'pd/gem' directories in your path!
However, GEM also seems to be sensitive to where PD is located. I could not start GEM when I installed PD in a subdirectory (e.g. c:\music\pd\ with gem in c:\music\pd\gem\) but …
[View More]that doesn't seem to be your problem.
By the way, are you using NT or 95/98?? I have tried win95 and Linux, and I think the it is running rather slowly under win95 compared to the Linux version.
Please don't by a G3 - make a Linux box instead - it's free - and better ;-)
Gee, I hope this works, otherwise this will look like a REEEEAL stupid answer!!

Hi !
What configure does is just trying to compile a mini program with the library.
You can look into src/Gnu/config.log what happened (must be at the very end).
You could also try to link a mini progam with gltt yourself, then you will see why
the linker can´t find it.
That is, configure currently looks in the standard paths and in the AuxLibs path for
a *compiled* gltt.
Also, I have just finished version 0.77 and it is currently being uploaded to Debian.
If that succeeds I will announce …
[View More]the new version publicly.
Good luck

Subject: gem on linux
hey there
been installing PD on a gericom notebook (dubious austrian manufacturer)
and it runs really fine, but when i try to install gem, i still get the
same ERROR (while configuring GEM with ./configure) namely while "looking
for main in gltt" it just doesnt find/recognize gltt, althoug its
installed (in /usr/local/) and also hanging out in the AuxLibs directory
(which if specified in the configure file as the dir to look for libs)
any hints fro that, thanks loads, osss
p.s.: all this on a "freshly installed RedHat 5.1" thingy linux
so, should i just switch to debain?? ;)

For those who want to know ..
The solution the last time was, that RedHat´s configuration tool broke the network setup.
So, when doing
> ifconfig
you should see a lo0 net device.
Pd needs the lo0, but I´m not sure why ... (X can run without that).
How to get Redhat back into it´s proper state is also unknown to me as I´m using Debian.
Anyhow, if pd and pd-gui are in your path (which is normally the case after doing a make -f makefile.linux install),
it is most likely a problem with your …

for some time but still get the mac withdrawels vrvy now and then . Your

ive installed it ok - along with tcl8 but when I run it i get the
followiung error-
[dee@frank 1.manual]$ pd
Pd version 0.23
compiled Sun Oct 4 22:13:59 EST 1998
port 5400
Waiting for connection request...
TCL_LIBRARY=/usr/tcl/library TK_LIBRARY=/usr/tk/library /usr/bin/pd-gui
5400
I symlinked tcl-tk directores to the above directories but still not

I also checked the discussion lists and note that this question has been

I think I got the same message when I first installed Pd on our SGI O2. I
asked Miller and he said it had to do with the fact that Pd …
[View More]has a problem
with search paths and he is working on it. The solution it the use the
full path for the executable in your alias, something like
" alias pd '/usr/local/pd/bin/pd' ". I think what happens is that the
audio processing part of Pd can not find the window managers, tcl and tk,
and the gui with out a compleate path specification.
