I just tried "open /Applications/iChat.app" to [shell] and it works ...
Yes, because in that case, shell is just launching iChat.app what i need to do is run an application FROM a Terminal window. That's why i need to launch a new shell to do so (the pd one is busy running pd) i thought about osascript, but i want to make sure there's no other option. it'd be so handy to do that from pd... any thoughts?

so what kind of command are you sending ? and why do you need the Terminal window ? if you need the output maybe you can just redirect to file and tail it from a Terminal window

You would have to start terminal.app with shell. That should give you a terminal. But I am not sure if I understand correctly what you want to do.
