hi,
i'm trying to use prepend to build a string. i'm running into a strange problem. prepend seems to put a space after the string it is adding.. i need it to prepend its string without a space onto the message. is there a way around this? or another object i should try?

yes, "prepend" is designed to produce lists, therefore the spaces.
the objects you need to produce a spaceless strings are:
"makefilename" (pd-native) or "makesymbol" (part of the zexy-library)
