Hello friends,
I tried to test some MIDI with PD-0.37-4 but I have few problems maybe some of you experienced?
I use a mandrake 10 with kernel 2.6-sds37 and also come back on the other 2.4mm29 I had good experiences with PD-036 & MIDI but I didn't try since!
jackd recognize the midiman 2x2 + controler (I tested some others apps) but it seems pd didn't write midi in jack, maybe you already no that? but even in oss there's no MIDI, there is no read/write permissions on /dev/midi even if we write on it -mididev 1 2 3, others application work fine!
if someone have an idea, please answer!!
thanks

pd cannot use jack's midi possibilities. it needs a simple (OSS) /dev/midi or /dev/midi* device to read from or write too. if you cannot write to /dev/midi, you most probably don't have the permissions. try to "ls -l /dev/midi*" and watch out whether the perms are ok (if it links to something, check the referenced file) probably you need to be in a special group to have write access to the device (like "audio" or "midi")

That's pity that PD don't use the midi possibility of jack! is that something todo for next PD release? or there is any plan for that issue?
thanks

Sorry for maybe being out of date, but since when does Jack do Midi?

Ciao
yes yes I mean that's pity that pd couldn't write midi on jack like ams or ardour, this apps could communicate to your midi interface through jack, and pd couldn't do it. what do you think Franck? linux user mainly use jack now, and pd and jack is really a great combination!! and pd-jack and midi that's should be greater!!!!

Ahm, sorry, since when does Ardour do midi? ;)
No, I looked it up on the website of Jack now, and there's not a hint of the word Midi there. I know, that there is an unpublished midi suport for Jack in the works, which seems to have some legal problems to be sorted out, but none of the official versions of Jack support midi.
Maybe you are thinking about the midi connections tab in qjackctl?? This has nothing to do with Jack itself but it is a conneciton manager for the ALSA sequencer. To use Pd with that, you need to load the snd-virmidi module which creates ALSA sequencer enabled rawmidi devices. Search google for me and the "Softsynth and Midi Howto".

Beware, it's a very old text, I didn't really proofread it aggain when adding it to my page now.

franck, I think you right to araise thise question, because it's not so clear for many of us, loof for example the presentation of MuSE :
MusE is a *MIDI/Audio sequencer[...]* [...] Jack
* Use the Jack Audio Connection Kit for midi/audio routing.
they don't talk about qjackctl, it's the same for many software using midi as control or format. It's interesting to discuss, it's true that we used qjackctl with alsa sequencer and it's true that the audio & midi in this apps are completly separate! always interesting to look at the Dave Phillips page : http://linuxsound.atnet.at/ because there is plenty of tools to do it!! thanks to light my view on this point :-)
I will test you stuff!

Juto's just confused because qjackctl allows for making alsa midi connections and one can do that in the same window as the audio (different tab, though).
Juto:
I just noticed that in the 0.37_devel CVS branch of pd the midi ports
are not listed with -listdev . However, you can easily test your MIDI
functionnality by trying out different settings in the Media->MIDI
settings... menu item. PD should display (and use) them correctly.
If you need to communicate via MIDI with other applications you should take a look at the link below, it also explains how to set up virtual MIDI ports.
