Ok, test 4 is up... at this point I'm hoping it's in good enough shape that I can make it the release - if there are show-stopping bugs I'll try to fix them, but any more "enhancements" should now wait for 0.49 :)

I can't open any help file... anyone else?
Mac OS 10.12.6
Also, when I compile from the source, I get the usual Pd looks, with font rendering and stuff, but these test releases all look weird here on my mac
cheers

Ok, that's because I was experimenting with flags, like "verbose", and also "Use standard extensions"... with the latter unchecked, I learn that you can't load help files.
But there's still the other thing I said, that it still "looks weird"
cheers

Just tried the windows binaries: opening help files form the context menu works and patches look as usual.

For w32: I'm getting strange chars on the command line & in the "standard(mmio)" devices names, but "ASIO" names works Ok.

This is odd... I don't get this in wine but will see if I can reproduce it on a real windows machine. I did change the device naming code to make it check for string overflows; I can't see how that could be causing problems but apparently it is.
If I can never find teh problem I can just try changing the code back to what it was :)

It happens on win8 & win10 real machines.

Do you suspect this is also causing:

Hmm... I cranked up teh old W2K machine, still can't see this happen (although I did discover that something had taken up residence in the power supply which promptly made a cloud of foul smoke. Viva Windows!)
Will try on a newer machine (will have to borrow it).

Please borrow one!
I guess many of us will gladly give you a good win machine (I mean, you know, the "computer music" thing.....)
Here in Buenos Aires there are 15000 pc stores for 1 apple store, if your Mac psu has a faulty capacitor they will get you a new one on 15 days, on the next shipping. They don't even dare to unscrew the psu and change the cap or the fuse.

I just tried on a virtual machine running on Oracle's https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads
I never tried on linux but surely it works on a machine with at least 4GB of ram. It might be boring setting up the windows vm.
I"m getting the same "strange chars" as in a real machine, on the cmd prompt and in the input/output devices.
Here's a screenshot:

Device names not showing up might scare "New comers".

I still have the segmentation fault when compiling with jack support. From the feedback of others, I gather it might be cause by the libjackd2 version that comes with KXStudio.
