First, is it possible to edit a symbol, like delete 2 characters from the end and add 3 others in their place? I'm currently saving each score as 2 files, with different extensions. I can do it fine with a "read" message, but was kind of wishing to allow an openpanel. 2nd, I was considering embedding an authorship message (I know some shady characters who I don't trust), and wondered if it was possible to have Pd query the computer's date automatically? Not a big deal, but I'm curious. Thanks. Chuckk

this is possible with [symbol2list] from zexy. just send a [symbol( to the right inlet. if you then send a 'symbol dog' to its left inlet, you'll get 'list d o g'. with [repack 1] (also from zexy) you can make 'symbol d', 'symbol o' and 'symbol g' out of it.

Cool. I have two questions now. Does openpanel destroy depth-first? It won't complete the cycle here until I choose a file, but once I do it prints the extension ".trs" before the truncated filename. I know sometimes [print] works differently depending on depth-first, but this are two distinct branches; and the second one fires before the first every time. If the middle bang is rerouted to the " sequencer.ji" message instead of the openpanel, it prints correctly.
I'm also not sure how I can reassemble the individual stuff into a single symbol again. [pack] is the old standby, but I don't know how many inlets it will need. On 9/6/05, Roman Haefeli reduzierer@yahoo.de wrote:

Okay, nevermind. I simply hacked off the file extension and used that with $1.ji and $1.trs. And I figured out how to reconstitute it. Thanks a lot! Still curious what [openpanel] does to depth-first. On 9/7/05, Chuckk Hubbard badmuthahubbard@gmail.com wrote:

Maybe [s2l .] can be of help here combined with [l2s] and/or makefilename.

There is the [date] external in Zexy, however if Zexy isn't installed, the copycats will laugh their ass off. ;)
