Hello list,
I just successfully got Guenter's PDa working on an ipaq h5550 with, unbelievably, almost no problems. The 'PDa on HP IPAQ 5550' list thread was incredibly helpful.
Some things:
Derek Holzer's 'ForwardX11Trusted yes' was only 'ForwardX11 yes' for me, in RH9. And for some reason was already in my ssh_config, not sure if I'd done that myself previously or not...
Also the -rt flag is mandatory if you want any kind of sound. Is there a way to do this without being logged into the ipaq as root?
Um, Guenter's editing of /etc/ipkg/pda.conf didn't work for me, so I got the packages manually.
I got kismet working too and plan on interfacing kismet and Pd. Anybody have any suggestions on how to do this? On my laptop I've been using python as a kind of proxy/parser to do it. Is there a way to do this directly on PDa (since there's no [netclient] for it)?
Also, I haven't tried, but is it possible to run PDa with just the barebones bootstrap installed, and not GPE?
Thanks to Guenter for this work. This is awesome, I'll never use my laptop again!

hi david,
I read:

for just getting sound I cannot confirm that but since this is kernel 2.4 it's really needed to convince the kernel to grant pd the cpu cycles it deserves.

hmmm ... I quickly found that most interesting things (including ping for some reason) require root privileges anyway so I'm trying my best to over- come my unix conditioning to do most things as joe user and only sysadmin tasks as root ... (and back in the days I used to run pd as root very often when performing so why not do it now on the ipaq)

same here - but I didn't find this too troublesome

well the easiest way is to change the festival/play paths to something else and write your own scripts to interface with those. This is rather easy for festival but a bit more of a hassle for play since kismet loads the wave files itself and only pipes the pcm data to play - what I did was making dummy waves that contain only numbers that are easily parsed by a pseudo play script that will then pdsend an appropriate command to pd. That's a bit ugly so I might patch kismet to call play or whatever with an argument when I find time. I can send you the scripts if you like and of course I'll put the ipkg online (and a few more) when it's done.

use python and OSC or python to call pdsend.

it could work but obviously -nogui only
Thanks to Guenter for this work. This is awesome, I'll never use my laptop again!
hehe unless you want to actually write anything, or watch a dvd or ...

X,
I'm not actually interested in getting the audio from kismet to Pd, but the data, and then parsing it in Pd to perform whatever functions. So the whole festival/play thing isn't really an issue...
I think what I should have said is that I want to write a kismet client in Pd.
At the moment there's no space to install py, but maybe I'll just have to buy an SD card and put py there to figure this all out. I'd like to eliminate as many middle steps as possible.

it's not audio it's just the info you can configure in kismet.conf like (using either dummy wave files or a tiny patch to kismet server or ui)
# New network found # Wepped new network # Network traffic sound # Network junk traffic found # GPS lock aquired sound # GPS lock lost sound # Alert sound
(those get send to play)
and to festival it sends:
# %b is replaced by the BSSID (MAC) of the network # %s is replaced by the SSID (name) of the network # %c is replaced by the CHANNEL of the network # %r is replaced by the MAX RATE of the network
that's quite some info ;)

see above, I thought about writing a kismet client external, but then I never needed one enough to actually do it ;)

yeah I put most stuff on the sd card and it works nicely

X,
Ah... thanks for the explanation, I wasn't thinking straight.
I think I'd like to get more information than that, like packet data and stuff like that.
But... If you've done this before, do you think you could send the scripts you made my way? I'm curious...

Hi,
I always use root on the iPaq too, don't think its dangerous.
Um, Guenter's editing of /etc/ipkg/pda.conf didn't work for me, so I got the packages manually.

The problem is that I install it by hand too, so I just tested it the first time .. seems to be broken now, but I will fix it with the next release.

There are two ways to get space on the iPaqs, one is to do a "slimdown" from the GPE install, the other is to install just the barebones bootstrap and add X by hand. I have just done the same this week, I can send you the list of packages I installed on top of barebone if you want to do that. "-nogui" should work directly.

:) the real drawback is that it is hard to hide behind the PDA during concerts ...
