Pick up the Linux adapter for the PS2. There is even an OpenGL like graphics api.

I believe that was on an xbox running Linux. I'm sure it's not a simple task getting it to work.

Hi folks
been fooling with GEM and loving it. Making cool .obj files in Wings3d etc..
But i would like to have a simple spinning object for demo purposes
How can i set a line to go from 360 to -360 etc.. i am sure this is a simple question but i am a simple kinda guy...
lol
Hello,
Perhaps I'm crazy here, but there are only 360 degrees in a circle. Shouldn't your line go from 360 to zero? Or do you somehow want 720degrees of rotation?
I would link a metro to a counter to a [mod 360] (the result would be 0 to 360 forever and ever and ever)

Maybe I'm just being pedantic:) (but it is the morning and I can't deal with anything more complex)
but 360degrees is equal to 0 degrees so you'd want to go from 359 to 0 or 360 to 1.
All the Best, Ed.

You're not being pedantic, you're being wrong, and I'm the real pedantic this morning ;-)
If you want to make a full circle but so that the circle function is a bijection from a real segment onto a circle, then you need a half-open interval of length exactly 2*PI radians, or 360 degrees.
So 0 to 360 degrees, with either of the bounds excluded, is a proper interval for that. If, for example, we pick the one that excludes the 360 bound, the set has theoretically no maximum, but in the float32 approximation, 359.99997 is the maximum, as it is 360*(1-2^-24).
Have a good day :-)

And to correct myself in my earlier message,
[mod 360] actually produces numbers between 0 and 359 forever and ever and ever.

well, overflows won't happen that often, but you should be aware of this ;-) that's why i'd prefer the couter that's reseted when reaching 360...

i am pretty limited on my linux A/v side save for cinelerra so i am focusing my GEM tests on WinXp and OSX. I think i have aquired the most up to date version for OSX but where do i locate the newest for windows? I was having incredible performance from GEM with my Sony digital 8 on OS X. and Fantastic luck with the tutorial examples.
I would like to see how this stacks up with the windows version.

Hi Pat,
The latest build of the CVS version of GEM for Windows is available at www.bogusfront.org
You'll find the performance for patches with lots of texture transfers to be a little disappointing on Windows I suspect, as Microsoft has not optimized this path as much as Apple. Please post the results of your comparisons.
Cheers, Daniel

Is there a simple how to for compiling with this monster?

Hi Pat
Good to see that you are having a nice experience with the OSX GEM stuff - Jamie and I have put a lot of work into making it run well. I have just finished adding some Alitvec versions of the chroma_keyer and convolution function and will be working on some more optimizations and also finally starting on the RGB side of things. Oh and if you are using pix_video right now try yuv_video and it should speed up about 2.5 times. We need to sort out the YUV and RGB defaults and switching soon.
What machine are you running GEM on? I would like to compile a better set of recommended setups for GEM on a Mac.
Also, what further tutorials would you like to see? I have a short list of 'advanced' ones that include color-space, texture coordinates and the particle system - it's just a question of sitting down and doing them.

funny you should mention a chroma key because keying has been on my mind. Just started using zmatte for post work.. RTalpha subtraction and convolution as you mentioned will be a wonderful tool as well. what i would love to see is the ability for GEM to read different file types like .flt, .iv, .pfb etc.. and have be able to tweak those inside a gemwin...
and of course a way to dump out to .mov or .mpg or avi is a must at some point

zmatte and the other keying tools in a package like shake are great tools for professional post - the keying in GEM isn't quite that caliber however. the thing about real-time software is that the processing has to happen in order and within a strict schedule, which is not the same as post workflows. i'll look into those formats but don't hold your breath. ;)

you can actually save image sequences on OSX using pix_write now. it uses Quicktime's GraphicExporter so by saving the sequence to a folder you can open the first image using 'Open Image Sequence' and it will assemble a QT .mov. Right now the only option is photo-jpeg set to high quality, but i can add any of the oterh supported QT image formats like .tiff .sgi .png and so on. let me know what you need.
oh and the pix_record object is on the list, the thing holding it up is cross-platform requirements and me sitting down and pounding out the object (that QT book is around here somewhere....)

Hi So we today successfully got spatialised audio running via socket with OpenAL and Performer. with a flypoints program dumping xyz coordinates to a text then hardcoding in the OPenGL map locations.
I would still like to be able to read these coordinates on the fly. I realise OSC seems to be the way to go but i am unsure how we would set up Perfly to spit out the properly formatted info for OSC/pd to read. I have talked to a few folks on the msp list and they say they are using OSC successfully but i am a network newbie when it comes to these things

Overflow will never happen.
It will stop at 16777216.
For, do this:
[16777216( | [+ 1] | [& 255] | [print]
print: 0
This is because 16777215 is the last odd integer available in float32 format.
Note: if you save the patch and reload, the result will be much different:
print: 241
but that's because PD does a little too much rounding while saving the patch. but with binary<->decimal conversions, it's either too much or too little: the "number of significant (decimal) digits" is not integer.

if you need a modulo that works with floats, probably try [wrap] from zexy (quite new; use the cvs-version or get the latest from ftp://iem.at/pd/Externals/ZEXY ) it is also useful, if you not only want to wrap between [0, 360), but, say, between [-180, 180), or [3, 4) (maybe not that useful with degrees)
but then i am glad, people sent real pd-patches and not references to externals.
