hi all
i've got a problem with gui objects in devel_0_37. when i move the mouse across some of the gui objects (sliders, grid ...) i can hear some clicks ... pd runs in realtime mode, i reniced pd-gui to 19, but still i hear some clicks...
i had similar problems with 0.36, but solved them using yves degoyons's patch ... is there a similar patch for 0.37?
or is there any other solution (renicing the windowmaker / x server) ?
thanks...

Seems like you are doing the right things: lite-duty window manager [you are using windowmaker, correct?], -rt flag, etc.
I don't have any such problems, and I am using Pd version 0.37.1 devel with Fluxbox windowmanager under Gentoo on a laptop. I do notice that if I have another app running that does something with the screen space [the animations played in the Gkrellm2 system monitor, for example], then I get periodic interruptions of sound. However, I can use grids, sliders, and even open up subpatches and drag them around without fear of boo-boos.
So what is the differences between my system and yours? It could have something to do with PCI interrupts, I suppose. Where is your sound card and where is your video card in regards to IRQ assignments? Are you on a desktop or a laptop? What is your sound card and what is your video card? Can you reassign IRQs in the BIOS, or failing that, try the card-rearrangement-voodoo-dance? Low-latency and/or preemptive kernel patches? Kernel version? Need...more...information.... ;-)

my system: laptop, gentoo linux, kernel 2.4.23-ck1, maudio quattro, ati radeon... since it's laptop, i can't reassign irqs ... but since the soundcard is a usb device and the video card an agp device, i don't think that it has something to do with interrupts (although i'm not sure...)
anyway, i'll try yves patch first...

Yves posted an updated version about a month ago here or on pd-dev. I vaguely remember, that Guenther considered to put it in the CVS version, but so far he didn't, AFAIK.

i just found it in my archive ... strange that i missed the original posting ... i'll try it later ...
since, at least on the devel_0_36 this made some differences, it would make sense to add it to devel_0_37...

mm, this patch has been ported "as is" to pd-0.37, but i must warn you thet it might crush the evolutions and fixes from 0.36 -> 0.37 because it was not a merge, just a copy of those files, i know, could have done it better ...
well, here it is, and if you feel like doing the merge, you'll be welcome.
guenter also wanted to integrate this patch in 0.37-devel, pero no sé ..
ciaaooo, sevy
or is there any other solution (renicing the windowmaker / x server) ?

hi all
i've got a problem with gui objects in devel_0_37. when i move the mouse across some of the gui
objects (sliders, grid ...)
i can hear some clicks ... pd runs in realtime
mode, i reniced pd-gui to
19, but still i hear some clicks...
i had similar problems with 0.36, but solved them
using yves degoyons's
patch ... is there a similar patch for 0.37?
mm, this patch has been ported "as is" to pd-0.37, but i must warn you thet it might crush the evolutions and fixes from 0.36 -> 0.37 because it was not a merge, just a copy of those files, i know, could have done it better ...
well, here it is, and if you feel like doing the merge, you'll be welcome.
guenter also wanted to integrate this patch in 0.37-devel, pero no sé ..
ciaaooo, sevy
Ok, i have a question to the list !
So it sounds like i have a similar problem:
This is my setup:
Planet CCRMA kernel 2.23 - ReDHat 8 Hammerfall DSP + Multiface PD 0.37
It all runs......so far, but now PD crashes - i still didi not find out when exactly.
I reinstalled RedHat8 with Planet CCRMA because i had the same clicks described above ! And i thought Planet CCRMA would solve that.......It did only partially, well, and now it crashes.......Bad Deal, inst it !
So .... I am a "professional user" in so far that i was used to Macs before... I think PD is a great system and i love the "Open Source" Idea but...........
The system like that is unusable.....The Clicks are, as far as i believe unacceptable and you have to be a HArdCore Hacker to apply all those patches, and tuning things........
I thought everything you can do to avoid clicks is included in Planet CCRMA, but it does not look like that .....
So i dont want to complain, i just wonder if you on this list just see it in a different way......
An Audio system with this high probability of Clicks is actualy "not working".
Whats the use of a realtime-system if i cannot use the mouse because it produces clicks ???
Or maybe its just the configuration....
So here is my question:
Does anybody have a running system (it means, no clicks, no crashes, stable) with PD 0.37, Jack, ALSA, Multiface, Hammerfall DSP ????
What can i still optimize, check if sthg is wrong ???
Thanks a lot
Regards
Luigi

i don't know, if the planet ccrma rpms are compiled with debugging information, but you could try to find at least the function, where pd crashes (try a debugger like ddd, when pd crashes try backtrace)

yves patches are working quite well, on my system, but, please correct me if i'm wrong, pd isn't a thread-safe application (at least 0.36 wasn't, i'm not sure about 0.37), so these patches are a working solution, but a build-in solution with thread-safety and a working handling for long lasting operations as suggested by thomas grill will definitely be needed for a "stable" release of pd
I thought everything you can do to avoid clicks is included in Planet CCRMA, but it does not look like that .....
well, it shouldn't be that difficult to get apply this patch and compile it yourself ...

apply this patch, use the -rt flag, a small window manager (not kde or gnome), your interrupt settings seem to be ok ...
btw, what buffersize are you using? i'm not sure, if it's related to the buffersize ... to me it seems, that without yves patch, i get less clicks using very high buffersizes (around 400 ms) ...
take care...

Does anybody have a running system (it means, no clicks, no crashes, stable) with PD 0.37, Jack, ALSA, Multiface, Hammerfall DSP ????
Yes: me. I am using Gentoo, PD 0.37-devel, compiled from source with no additional patches, and ALSA, Jack and a PCMCIA-cardbus Multiface HDSP. I just performed with it last week, and the only major issues I faced were due to CPU-usage and denormalized numbers which caused them. [Keep waiting for this to get seriously addressed on the object- and external-level, but this is not related to your question...]
What can i still optimize, check if sthg is wrong ???
From your PCI arrangement, I can see that all your Human Interface Devices
[mouse, etc] are at IRQ 9, whiile the HDSP is at 10. Is this a laptop? If you have any way of getting the HDSP to IRQ 9 and all the other stuff to IRQ 10, you will be doing really good. Swap cards in the PCI slots if you can, or check your BIOS.
Failing that, I would try compiling PD 0.37-devel [get it via CVS] with --enable-alsa and --enable-jack flags. Usually, the Planet CCRMA packages are pretty good, but you can never be sure. I think Fernando is just starting to get more into the PD world, as can be seen by the only recent additions of many crucial PD externals.
Also, as Tim mentions, use a light-duty window manager like Fluxbox [my personal fav] or Window Maker rather than a flashy, full featured one like KDE or Gnome.
I noticed that my performance improved when I switched to Gentoo. This not necessarily because of the Gentoo packages per se, but instead because you can install a very stripped-down system with Gentoo [or Debian, or Slackware...] Red Hat tends to install lots of stuff you don't need when doing audio. Do you really need a mail server running while trying to do realtime audio? Cut down on all of your overhead and background processes and you will see improvements.
Small things: ---increase your buffer size in PD ---increase your frames per period in Jack ---run at 44100KHz instead of Linux-default 48000KHz sampling rate ---trying running as sudo or root and see if it makes a difference ---always use the -rt flag in PD ---always use the -realtime mode in Jack. ---make sure you have low latency kernel with capabilties patch [CCRMA should have that covered] ---do you need all those HDSP channels in PD? Try using the -channels flag. ---investigate ways to change the latency of your IRQs and the priority of processes [renice, for example in the latter case] ---don't run any apps which make constant updates to the screen [such as Gkrell system monitor, or anything with animations!] while PDing. ---keep your patches clean! Visible arrays of samples, for example, are death to audio performance. Put things in subpatches, and ask yourself how many graphical elements are really *necessary* for your patch to run. Graphics which are updated frequently by PD are just as destructive to sound as graphics in other applications!
Unfortunately, running Linux for audio is not like plugging in a Mac. Yet. A lot of rocket science is still pouring into the field, so for the time being, your setup will probably be as experimental as your sound.
Good luck! D.
