I am building my first modualr system with a little grant money i got for research. For the first 1000$ i got a beginner Pittsburgh Modular system and one envelope module. FOr the second 1000$ to complete the grant i am considering

i would LOVE to buid a patch with about 3 simple effects that are not in the traditional analog modular world a sample and hold and a simple RM

and be able to toggle through the effects. It says it runs pd-vanilla
Has anyone on the list seen/used or can confrim that the code actually runs properly
I have been searching through the web and Muffwiggler and i have not seen any proof of it running so i am skeptical but still curious
before i lunk down 400+4 i want it to run my patches or at least a detailed how to
please let me know if you have any experience with it.

I'm pretty good friends with the guys at QuBit. In fact, they hired me to help them get PD working on the Nebulae! I only wrote some basic tests for it, but people are definitely using it for PD.
pd-vanilla is what it ships with, but with some work it may be possible to include compiled PD objects from pd-extended.
There are definitely custom Csound patches available online. Not sure about any PD ones. They do supply templates for PD patches that work. I was the one who wrote it (though they might have tweaked it a bit since then.)
It's a great sounding module that I highly recommend. Let me know if you have any more questions about it on or off list.

I have a raspi uno which I don't think is fast enough a friend is going to give me a beagle board which has I/o and I hope audio in. Without real time audio in its a deal breaker for me

vertical mounting in Eurorack. Mounting holes and solder holes are also provided to connect and mount the midi part after separation. i have made some advances.
I installed Debian Wheezy onto the Raspi
I programmed the arduino to excpet the potentiometers and all 6 react from 0-1023
They are both responding
I found the same bug where pd -nogui needs about 1/2 second to "boot" before turning on the dsp
I also had to change the WProgram.h to Arduino.h in the Simple Messages System library which works well when placed in Arduino/Libraries.
Now i am looking for a nice pd patch that can granulate sound without the need for a table to be written first. I am looking at Bill Orcutt's Grain2.0 port.? in conjunction with the Arduino2pd patch.

I think my Model B took closer to a minute to fully boot and start my Pd patch.
The Model 2 seems a little faster, maybe 30 seconds or less, but unfortunately I don't think an almost instant boot time is realistic (I would LOVE to be proven wrong on this). It's definitely one of the more frustrating things, if you want to use the Pi at a gig or something. Then again, it could be a lot worse.
The determining factors will probably be what distro you're using, and how many services have to be started up at the very beginning.

TBH my experience is with the Hoxton OWL and that has a custom bare-metal OS running. You plug it in and it works... haven't timed it.

The other issue is that the raspi that i have does NOT have a line in, only a line out for sound i bought a little USB soundblaster card for that to see if i can get audio in to a ADC~

One of the cards using the digital audio interfaces is probably a better idea, to avoid all the very poor USB on the RPi.
I've used the Wolfson ones and they have proved very reliable (the main issue for me is that I can't use them directly from the GPU since I can't set them as the default output ... but via alsa from userspace they are great). They take a bit of setting up (a custom kernel which works fine with raspbian wheezy at least, plus a few scripts) but then are very flexible and control-able via alsa, including the ability to choose which audio clocks to use.

It's definitely one of the more frustrating things, if you want to use the Pi at a gig or something. Then again, it could be a lot worse.
Is the load time any different using the -nogui flag?
Also, how many abstractions are there in your patch?

I haven't taken great measurements of this stuff, but from what I can remember, PD startup is very fast - I am using -nogui, it only takes a second or two.
