Hello
I have been using Pd on Red Hat 9 / Planet CCRMA for over one year with great satisfaction. Some info, kernel = 2.4.11 low latency, sound card = hdsp multiface, pd version = 0.37.
Recently, for some crash reason I had to make a complete new installation of linux. As I didn't have much time, I used a ubuntu-linux installation cd that someone gave me (hopefully) some days before. Now I have to use Pd again but I can't get it work on this new system.
The first thing I need is to have the (hdsp) sound. I tried to install the latest stable alsa driver but the ./configure script says "unsupported soundcard hdsp", which of course doesn't look normal.
Maybe the best solution for me is to install a low latency kernel that includes a correct alsa driver. Will the planet CCRMA kernel work with ubuntu-linux ? or should I install RH9 again instead ? Are there other kernels for this ? The thing is that I don't have a lot of time to spend on this. I can install another kernel, possibly another linux distribution, like RH9 (I have the CDs) -- but definitely not build an audio-specific gentoo linux, for example.
After I have a low latency alsa kernel, I can install the hdsploader program and everything should work.
Last thing : I currently have pd-0.38 (original version) installed on this machine. When I type "pd -jack", I get a message telling me that this flag doesn't exist. So I tried to install pd-devel_0_38, but ./configures says that there is no Tcl header on my machine, though tcl/tk is clearly installed ...
So if anyone has a quick solution for running Pd as soon as possible, it will be truly appreciated
best regards, -j

To fix the kernel problems you might consider installing the agnula kernels:
add the following to /etc/apt/sources.list
deb http://apt.agnula.org/demudi testing local
apt-get install kernel-image-2.4.25-1-multimedia-386 apt-get install alsa-modules-2.4.25-1-multimedia-386
use alsaconf to configure the card, unfortunately I have no experience with the HDSP.
for PD:
apt-get install puredata
I don't know if this will work, but its quick to try

It only has problems if you use MIDI output a lot. I decided to accept the alsa midi patch because I think it opens a lot of possibilities on Linux. I haven't reviewed it properly, I am sorry for that.
But actually this points out the very problem that Miller has when people contribute. It is sometimes easier to write the code yourself than having to review code of others.

In this case I couldn't find the leak that you are talking about. The one I found was when sending MIDI.
Going to investigate further. Thanks for the bug report.

hi,
I just found one courious thing about ALSA, it seems that they changed the behaviour of how midi events are allocated. This means that if you have an old ALSA version, then there is a missing "snd_seq_event_free()" in sys_poll_midi(). With the newer version the MIDI events shouldn't be freed. Which version of ALSA do you have ? How long does it take for you until Pd crashes ?
Just wondering, because noone else reported the problem up to now. An old ALSA library would be an explanation.

PS: You can debug memory leaks easily using valgrind.

this might be an explanation ... the machine was running a knoppix 3.6 hd install ... not sure, which alsa it was using ...

about 10 to 20 minutes, sometimes only a few minutes...

Ok, I think someone else would have noticed that, so it is likely to be the alsa thing.

well, good. The next time if you do a bug report, can you please include all this information. This would make the task a lot easier.

Ubuntu is a debian based distrobution so it could work with the debian tools. I think you'll want to do the apt-get thing with pd. If you want to compile from source, you will also need include files of everything ( usually the -devel packages ).
I have looked ubuntu a few days ago, but it's not really a 'developer' distro with all the includes you would like to have. If you can solve your problems using the debian tools you should be fine, else I'd turn to something that gives you the includes and full sources directly instead of trying to fix a cripple distrobution.
Redhat, Suse or slack are your friends there ( I guess debian too ) However, that's a personal view.

I suppose I should ask this list, then --
I'm trying to get Debian (kernel 2.4.18) running on a PPC (iBook 300 MHz - I know, it's ancient) - has anyone else out there had any luck with installing a low-latency patch into the kernel? Agnula/Demudi have yet to be ported to PPC, and it seems most Linux users are disgruntled ex-Windows users, very few are running Linux on a Mac.
Thanks david

Yes, very few are running linux on mac. IOne can say it's masochist. So I am. pd WAS working (fine) on my powerbook G3 @ 400 MHz (pismo), with a Debian (last summer) and then ubuntu (warty). Since the (ubuntu) hoary release, I still have NO sound. Alsa is not working, nor OSS.

Just because by many other aspect, the ubuntu disto is much more easy to instal, even with a mac. I do know ubuntu is an unstable disto on debian, and hoary an unstable ubuntu. In a other hand, wifi config. with airpot was not a trivial problem to fix on mac. It's (quite) fixed with hoary. So, I had sound but no wifi: I have now wifi and no sound. May I wish both together before 6 months ? If I'm following you're way, since I began with a NeXT 10 years ago, I should continu to play sound with FTS on NeXTStep: it stills run and was already OSX like ! Just a little bit more heavy.

good morning
thank you everybody for your anwsers about this topic, and sorry for giving such late feedback
finally, I went back to linux red hat 9 with the planetccrma low latency kernel, alsa driver and apt packages (after about 1 or 2 hours I could run Pd with JACK at a I/0 buffer period of 64 samples ...)

I'd like to issue a warning here: The latest stable A/Demudi 1.2.0 includes Pd packages which are ridden with some nasty bugs, as I had to find out yesterday on a friend 1.2.0 install. Not even "expr" did work in the default install, and trying to use my rradical patches will lead to immediate crashes because the wrong "prepend" is in the A/Demudi pd-externals package.
However the latest offical Debian 0.38 packages by Guenther are fine in general (apart from the recently discovered amidi memory leak and maybe some other bugs like [1] which are due to pd-0.38 being not really officially stable) as are Guenther's pd-externals and pd-flext packages. I'm not sure if these are also in A/Demudi 1.2.1 yet, but they probably will be sooner or later and can be installed now without much hassle even on A/Demudi.
[1] Did you see this one, Guenther: http://tinyurl.com/69nu3 ? It's a one-line patch, but IMO critical in several usecases.

Seems to be save enough to be included. But then we still have all the other versions and Millers version that don't work this way, so it would be better if Miller accepts it.

On Ubuntu, run synaptic, open the repository settings and enable the "Universe" repositories and it'll offer you PD, low-latency kernel and a mess of other cool stuff.
