I manage to compile properly Vanilla on OS X using Dan autotools update. So, I suggest you to give a try with it. Follow the Dan command:
git clone https://github.com/pure-data/pure-data.git -b autotools_updates
cd pure-data ./configure make make app
With ./configure --help you get more option.

Right, and what I mean by “you’ll be out of luck” is that you currently cannot build on OSX using the git master from Miller’s site.
You need to use my branch which has the last month’s worth of improvements. After some testing all around (hopefully), then we’ll look at merging that into the master branch upstream.

please don't spread fud. obviously someone was able to build on OSX using the git master, since there are binaries available on miller's site.

so the problem really is, that OSX El Capitan has deprecated some functions currently used by PortAudio (thus creating a warning whenever such a function is used) and the compilation process treats warnings as errors (thus failing on the use of deprecated functions).
you have three choices to fix this:
- pledge your OS-vendor to not deprecate half of their API with each new
release
- downgrade your build-system to pre El-Capitan
- tell your build-system to not bail out on errors.
something like the following should work (though i haven't tested it):
./configure CFLAGS="-Wno-deprecated -Wno-error" make
apart from that, i think that your branch of autotools improvements is just great (and it *does* fix the problem in question, by adding these flags to the build by default)

... so I guess it can't be done on your system. (I'm using 10.6 to compile. I always keep my MacOS as old as I possibly can so that when I compile Pd it can run on the widest possible number of machines.)

The -i option tells it to use the included version of the Tk 8.4 Wish.app. I think that may work for you, so that set of commands tells you how to try building manually. The “make app” command runs this script but uses the latest Tk on you system which may not be fully working yet.
(I have another branch where I’m ironing out the new Tk issues on OSX).
The main thing is, you need to change directory in the pure-data/mac directory inside the pure-data folder.

The auto tools update is not finished on Windows. This is one reason why I didn’t want it merged yet, but alas it has been merged and sometimes that’s how it is.
I will update the build readme with instructions when I do get it working…

but hey, it's still possible to compile vanilla on mac os, it's just not merged yet, right? couldn't I just use the unmerged stuff?

The autotools_udpates branch has been merged, which means all the commits it had are now in the master branch. After the merge it was deleted.
This means just checkout the master branch: git clone https://github.com/pure-data/pure-data.git https://github.com/pure-data/pure-data.git

The autotools_udpates branch has been merged, which means all the commits it had are now in the master branch. After the merge it was deleted.
This means just checkout the master branch: git clone https://github.com/pure-data/pure-data.git

There is currently a bug in the script that creates the mac .app. Use the following after building pd to generate the .app instead:
cd mac osx-app.sh -i 0.47.1
