hi,
first a question for Miller: are you planning a GUI for the commandline options of PD ? (or would you use it if i made one)
i found a nice freeware install maker for windose: http://www.jrsoftware.org/isinfo.php (gonna make an installer atleast for pd, gem, zexy & framestein)
is this what pd uses ? http://www.tcl.tk/

i have been contemplating trying to make some pd packages for the cygwin installer:
the huge advantage there is that we could also make packages for all the external libraries as well. this would automagically give us package management and would track updates for the user. its pretty slick.
(almost as nice as .deb/apt :)

Speaking of user friendlyness, are there any plans to implement a status-bar containing mouseover descriptions of an object's inlets and outlets? I'd be happy to help write the verbiage.

or perhaps show this like many IDE's like VisualStudio do, when you hover the mouse over a variable, a tooltip pops up with the value.
while we are talking about wishlist ideas, i would personally rather have the middle button be a "bang" button... i am often wanting a single bang to trigger some code to debug it, but wiring up a [bang( always feels like a lot of work :)
a VERY good idea !!!
- how about middle mouse button shows (on mouse over) current data in cord
(or output)

I forgot to say, I'd love it if people would share their gui improvment brainstorms in this thread. I've been tinkering around in the pd tcl code and would like to find some way to help while learning. the more ideas i hear, the more likely i will find one that i can implement.

this is unrelated, but does pd have a step function (a la an IDE)?
the bang function somebody else mentioned is a half-assed version of this. max has one, though it's not that well done, that i can show you if you don't know what i mean. (the visual studio one i think it pretty good, but it doesn't translate directly to the visual object-connection interface. the best way to do this would involve some sort of highlighting in the GUI - max doesn't do this, nor anything else all that helpful. would be awesome for debugging.
so yeah, run through the processing tree, hgihlight each point and give sets of values (perhaps visually in GUI as well as in pd window) whenever appropriate (snag at large tables, etc.).

this is one feature of max that i liked and would like to implement once i learn tcl/tk . the other max feature i think i very very very useful is the segmented patch cords [able to do bended cords].
i was thinking of starting a gui environment for pd patches in java . but again i know know enough about how pd's gui code works.
