I am trying to get this sound blaster X-Fi Surround 5.1 sound card to work on windows with 6 outputs

The idea is to get a
adc~ 1 2 3 4 5 6
and route different sounds to each of the outputs that connects to self powered mono speakers.
But I am going nuts. The card only works with 2 outputs under ASIO. And with the default configuration if I set 6 outputs it does some kind of 5.1 mixing. I have tried to disable all 5.1 stuff under control panel but no way...

Sorry--I have no good news for you... and perhaps this knowledge only adds to your injury. The ASIC in your sound card has many, many times the potential that it actually gets used for--up to 10,000 MIPS on a quad-core DSP and up to 128 channels.

So, should it surprise you that you can't use 6 separate channels with your sound card now that you know what a colossal waste of hardware it is to put the ca20k2 chip in a 5.1 sound card?

The best you can do is write a distributed-computing virus that detects any such ASIC and hook it on some math problem such as trying to crack exterrestrial prime numbers and stuff... ;)

I believe the 20k2 chip was rolled out in 2007. By contrast, my 2009 HTC Hero had less power than that, but that's apples v. oranges.
The problem I see with this chip is just that: it has so much capability that it could be used for a wide range of products, but then the designers program it and build salable hardware around just one sort of "surround sound" product. The free market has clearly failed...

I see. so basically I could use this sound card to seach for life across the universe but I cannot separate the ****** output channels. great. not sure I have time to get another card on time. grrr...

I'm sorry if I discouraged you from looking further -- I suspect the hardware is doing the mixing in a way that's not under software control, but I don't know for sure that's the case.
I have a strong feeling about it, since Creative is restricting what the card is capable of. I suspect it's doing it's 5.1 mixing operations using the DSP.
It could be that some obscure driver option will bypass the DSP and take 6 channels from software.

I decided write the list because I also started to think that this mixing was "hardwired" in the card. I tested the sound blaster under linux and windows and it does exactly the same thing in both systems. I played around with all options in the windows sound blaster control panel and got all kinds of weird surround effects but no way to deactivate it.
I have a 12 euros unbranded 7.1 sound card that allows to do exactly what I am after but this is not mine so it cannot be used for a two months long installation. So I will visit few shops later and try to get some cards I can test.

That's for EMU10K1 and EMU10K2-based soundcards only.

Hi, I could do something similar on a multichannel sound card going through ASIO4all on a Windows machine. But the driver for the same sound card on Linux doesn't give all the channels easily at all. I haven't tried with MacOSX. I used a Terratec aureon USB 5.1 mk2 (and 7.1).
The ASIO driver of Pd in 0.42.5 can be a bit tricky. I think the Pd-X 0.43.1 solves a few issues there.
