If I disable alpha blending by sending a 0 to the first inlet of an [alpha] object, will the performance gain be the same as if I completely remove the [alpha] object?

yes and no.
if the object is there, you still have the overhead of a message entering and leaving the object.
from the openGL pov, disabling it (with "0") is equivalent to removing it.
