I'm looking for a way to read the names of files in a folder as well as filter for types (I know I can also build the plumbing to pattern match too)
is there a Pd object or abstraction that serves a similar function as the [folder] external in Max/MSP?
note: I played around with the [playlist] external which is *very* nice but not sure it allows me to filter for file types...?
any/all help is very appreciated :)

it does filter on extensions if you edit the properties, but it has a buguito :: if you enter extension .pd it will also show you .pd_linux ( it's a simple strstr )..

OK if I understand correctly: it can't distinguish between a patch and an external? is there a fix coming soon? just curious again -- very nice work on this external!

There's [folder_list] in hcs. If you look at its help patch I think you'll see it does what you want.

I second that. I used [folder_list] and it seemed to be fine.
I've also used other techniques in the past, such as piping from a shell's "ls" command, but using [folder_list] is the last way I've used, and I wouldn't use anything else at this point unless I'd have a good reason not to. (but I haven't investigated to predict whether I'd have a good reason not to in the future)

Well, I don't consider it to be grammatical, it seems to be a vocabulary issue instead, but in any case, it happened very often that mistakes become correct given enough time, and in fact, much of today's definitions and vocabulary started with things that sounded plain wrong and was frowned upon. But to make it correct, you first have to kill everybody who considers it wrong ;) or wait till they die on their own (the latter of which is what usually happens... but not all of the time !)
An example of grammatical "mistake" is to end a sentence with a preposition, but it's sort of a reverse case, because it's a change of opinion, not a change of grammar : ending sentences with propositions is traditional English, and a myth has been running around to justify a covert reform. But when using English, as much as I can be annoyed by many things, ending sentences with a preposition is obviously something I have never had a problem with.

Its the first in a library called 'ezfile' that aims to be a complete

I know that Hans is gravely against it, and that kind of gravity can bend the fabric of spacetime on puredata.info.
Actually, I have no idea about puredata.info, but I can tell you that pd-vanilla uses it and I don't think Miller ever said he'd "deprecate" it or delete it or anything.
Actually, I don't know how you search the text, but using the Namazu search, "sethelpsymbol" (without the quotes) gets a handful of results ; however, "class_sethelpsymbol" gets you many times more results.

Curious belief... I'm pretty sure that if Degoyon had had a help file about combing a giraffe, people would have bothered him big time. Then other people would have pointed at the said helpfile as a proof that Pd should not be taught in schools and stuff.

I'm not aware of the rules that you are talking about. One thing I do
know is that you don't need to use class_sethelpsymbol() for a object
called [playlist] unless the help patch is called something other than
playlist-help.pd.
So for 'unauthorized', all of the help patches are named after the
objects, so class_sethelpsymbol() is unneeded and redundant.

morning all,
On 2010-06-25 20:43:38, Hans-Christoph Steiner hans@at.or.at appears to have written:
I'm not aware of the rules that you are talking about.
huh?!
I clearly and distinctly recall that you (Hans) mentioned to me off-list in 2008 that use of class_sethelpsymbol() was deprecated for pd-extended ("it is best not to use class_sethelpsymbol() at all" [for pd-extended]) and recommended that I remove those calls from my code (to be fair, you offered to make the required changes yourself to the external which brought my use of class_sethelpsymbol() to your attention). I know that I added a few #ifdefs to some of my own externals in order to avoid those calls (and others) for pd-extended builds. I assume that the "changed rules" to which Yves refers in this context are simply the deprecation/breaking of class_sethelpsymbol() for pd-extended, versus its fully functional public-API status in pd-vanilla (@Yves: feel free to correct me if I'm mistaken here).
One thing I do know is that you don't need to use class_sethelpsymbol() for a object called [playlist] unless the help patch is called something other than playlist-help.pd. So for 'unauthorized', all of the help patches are named after the objects, so class_sethelpsymbol() is unneeded and redundant.
Indeed. The same holds (these days) for 'moocow'. I still feel that this discussion is relevant, though.
im(ns)ho, the problem is not so much a matter of the "official" (read "conventional") help-file naming scheme, but rather help files for class aliases (i.e. class-names allocated by class_addcreator(), which is also deprecated / broken in pd-extended), and external "families" (e.g. [any2bytes], [bytes2any], [any2wchars], [wchars2any]): any case in which multiple classes can/should/must share a single intuitive help patch. Such shared help patches however must be needlessly duplicated (e.g. copied on install) to conform with a strict conventional help-file naming scheme as apparently (formerly?) required by pd-extended, which I find inelegant as a programmer and a pain in the wahooni as an external maintainer. Don't get me started on multi-object libraries... just my €0.02 ...
marmosets, Bryan
ps - just to add yet another method for reading directory contents to the ever-growing list attached to the original (wobbling) thread: there's also [readdir], which gives you some filesystem information too (or perhaps [moocow/readdir] for pd-extended; I don't really know since I use pd-vanilla for reasons which may or may not be apparent)...

That's the usual mantra. Some kind of preaching without much justification. Thou shalt not use class_sethelpsymbol, thou shalt not use aliases, because it's ugly and wrong. it's wrong because it's ugly, and it's ugly because it's wrong. It's wrong because if you used class_sethelpsymbol, it would be ugly. (see also : begging the question !). It sounds like a seminar about young sheep being guided towards JAVA (Jesus Gosling was born in com.sun.labs.Bethlehem at the beginning of our era...)
Indeed. The same holds (these days) for 'moocow'. I still feel that this discussion is relevant, though.
I don't think it's Hans' business to impose a helpfile style through deprecation of class_sethelpsymbol. Library writers deserve more freedom than that... EVEN if they decide to misuse it, then Hans should not seek to ban sethelpsymbol for example, and instead should go against the content or the filename, such anything that Degoyon decides to be teaching us about giraffe(s).

How about you guys all speak for yourselves and let me speak for
myself. This time around, all I said is that there is the only time
to use class_sethelpsymbol() is if the help patch is different than
the classname of the object. Its redudant in that case.

A different issue: Line 1019 of playlist.c: class_sethelpsymbol(playlist_class, gensym("playlist.pd")); But the help patch is "playlist-help.pd," so pd apologizes: sorry, couldn't find help patch for "playlist.pd"
just delete that line.
btw, it's a good idea to put the comma outside of the quotes, in this case. English has conflicting standards about this kind of thing... it took me a long time before noticing the problem, but it happens once in a while. It's the same when quoting someone and the writing style makes it look like the exclamation mark was from the original author but it was actually added later, because the particular standard of English being used does not allow a distinction there...

true, British rules say the "comma", follows the quotations while American rules states the "comma," stays tucked inside same for periods/end of sentences
not sure about the exact rules (US or UK) pertaining to "!"
but my guess is exclamation marks should be placed outside quotation marks if intended to be in the author's voice and inside if the original speaker was being demonstrative
I can't believe he actually said "w00t"! -versus- He was so excited by his discovery of the [foo] external he exclaimed "w00t!." in this case the period follows the exclamation mark inside the quotations but not sure if this is correct...

You know, I didn't really remember which was which : I use the one I use because it's the standard in French. The US invented the other one because it's different from whatever the UK chose. I wouldn't know about how it is here because I don't read the news in English, but I'd guess it's an unequal blend of UK and US style, simply because many other things are. In north-american French, people stick Very Much to the French standard for those rules of punctuation order (but for the rules of punctuation spacing, however, the game is entirely différent).
He was so excited by his discovery of the [foo] external he exclaimed "w00t!." in this case the period follows the exclamation mark inside the quotations but not sure if this is correct...
I would *definitely* write it like :
He was so excited by his discovery of the [foo] external he exclaimed "w00t!".
Because the period ends the whole sentence and not the inside of the quote. You can distinguish whichever punctuation order I pick because it's easy to write down in a recursive parser and happens all over programming languages (though that's really not why I came to prefer it ; that's simply because it's used all over in the French language).
