we opened up the utility "Console" the following message comes up:
Error number -9990 occured opening portaudio stream Error message: Buffer too small
I have never seen my 002 work in PD no matter what version or settings. I see the same -9990 error you do. I don't know if it is a PortAudio or Pd problem, but no one has ever spent any decent amount of time on Pd's audio for OSX, so I wouldn't hold out for a fix soon.
we have another interface available (M-audio firewire 410, 2 in / 8 out - we need 4 ins for the piece), had thought of using the 002 in and M-audio out, but the only setting in the audio settings that gives us sound is when both in and out are set to Mac built-in audio, so this doesn't seem like an option either. what about sending into 002 (4 mic inputs) then via optical from the 002 to the M-audio? don't know how to get this to work, but would it be an option?
Use the 410 if it works. Put a mixer or pair of mic pres in front of the two 1/4" inputs if you need more than the two built in pres. If your 002 is the standalone (not rack) version then it should work as a mixer without being plugged into a computer.
in digidesign Coreaudio manager, when quitting and restarting we have discovered that the buffer settings we chose are not always still there! they are usually a notch lower than we set them at.
That makes sense because Digi's CoreAudio drivers a certainly a notch or two below anything else in existence. Having looked at the assembly for the driver I can say that you would have to hold some sort of contest to write worse code.
The original poster mentioned that everything worked fine using Max/MSP. It might be faster and less painful to move the patches to Max compared to trying to get Pd working with your gear.
chris/joão/others,

it is a standalone. you mean essentially merging two signals on each of the L/R inputs? this wouldn't work for this piece, the patch requires 4 distinct signals, coming from 4 instruments; each is processed separately in the patch.

yeah... but the concert is tuesday afternoon! while i'm on about it... info below.

concert time 16h30 in banff = 15h30 vancouver | 18h30 montréal | 23h30 UK | 24h30 euro-continent | sometime wednesday in aussie-land.
to catch the webcast, you can double-click on the following link (it won't work until the signal starts to broadcast), or copy it and paste it into a browser, either should automatically open the right application on your dumbputer.
