Hi,
I know a lot of you are doing installations while using PD, so I thought maybe it could be worth asking here: I am looking for little screens (about 1X1 inch, 3X3 cm) that can be plugged to a computer through USB for ex. We can usually find them mounted in digital cameras but I wonder if there is a way to buy them apart.
Thanks.
hmm... usb video output is pretty rare. normally you will have to get a video out card, or something that can take a vga output.
tho there is this usb video in/out (apparently) thing that i know nothing about: http://www.eskapelabs.com/myvideo.html
1x1 inch screens aren't very common. 3x4 screens are kind of common and you can find them on ebay as in car lcd displays. these are common amongst the DIY video projector crowd: http://fender410.tripod.com/
a really expensive way of getting almost what you want is to get hold of either of the sony headmounted displays (glasstron). (random google link)
http://www.reviewfinder.com/reviews/glasstron/index.asp
there are two models that i know of, different most importantly by about a factor of 2 in vertical resolution of the screens. made for tv, somewhat useless for data projection. something like 320x200.
there are some competing head mounted display products too, but i forget the names. search for a glasstron review on a devent hardware review and they will probably mention them in comparison.
if you find something else more appropriate please email me.. just because it sounds cool ;)

Yes, basically it is for a head mounted device. I found the sony glasses in question, but I wonder if I could find the monitors as an apart component to built my own glasses. Based on the fact that the cheapest webcam are around 40 Euros, and that you can actually find the 'iris' component for 23 euros, I thought that I could find the screens alone for a good price. Thanks

it's possible that you could find the component separately, but even if you were able to find the screen, the trick would getting an interface to it that you could use. i don't think you are likely to save too much money by trying to build something yourself here.
in the case of the webcams, you can get the iris with video out because the idea of getting a ccd and generating video signal from it is really common, and so it's all manufactured on one chip. but the most common way of getting data into an lcd is not with a video signal and certainly not with usb. if you found the component it would probably use a lower level lcd driver for such a small embedded component.

halo.
it took me a long time to find out why my pc freezes after about 30 minutes of operation. but now i think i found something.
i am using [mp3write~] to generate an mp3 file that is then taken by an other program and moved to a different folder (i can't do that within pd, right?). now i noticed that my system is continuously loosing memory while this patch is running. when there is no more physical memory available (which i am observing with taskmanager) the system freezes. closing pd priort to a freeze releases all the memory again.
the attached patch is a simplified version of the patch i am using. after stopping the mp3write~ i seem to have to open a dummy.mp3 file to release the other file to make it possible for another application to copy it. for my purpose i would use mode "truncate" of [mp3write~] then, but using modes "truncate" or "append" doesn't seem to make a difference.
using [writesf~] instead of [mp3write~] works. but i need .mp3 files. this happens running pd 0.36-0 on w2k and wxp using mp3write~ version 0.1
help meee youu. joreg.

Maybe you can convert the wav file into mp3 while you are moving it, with a standard file conversion program ?

mhm. thats exactly what i'm working on now. using lame to convert the wavs to mp3s. i think that will work but will of course not be the best way to go. if [mp3write~] really has that leak it might be easy for someone who knows the code to repair it.

Hi Joreg,
mp3write~ dows not close the file once you've stopped recording. So you have to quit Pd or load/open another file before you can do anything else with the file you just recorded...

yes. thats what i am doing in my patch.

but memory gets only released after i quit pd. opening another file is not enough.

hi,
unfortunately, there's not a single memory allocation in the main loop of mp3write~ : every internal structure is allocated at object creation, so if something leaks, it's surely lame library itself.
it's funny that i don't see this phenomenon with lame 3.92 on linux.
cheers,

ok..on initialize [mp3write~] says its using lame 3.90. i do have a lame.exe (and the according dll) here that says it is 3.91 how can i make the node use the newer version?

You would need to recompile using libmp3lame.lib and a correcponding lame.h for that version. But I don't see what's wrong. As I said before you can't access a file before opening a new one. I could add a 'close' method if you really need it...

sorry, i'm recording a radio show here for half an hour and still not a leak in mp3write~.

did you take a look at my patch? what i am doing is not recording one long file but several short ones. that may make a difference?!
btw. am i assuming correctly that "truncate" means that everytime i send a start message (after a stop messagE) the file is supposed to be reset to 0? hmm. i have the mode set to "truncate" (opened another file afterwards) and the file is still growing...

you could try the "system"-object in the "motex"-library to send commands to the console from within pd. this way you could start batch-programs to move the mp3 file. but i guess you would have to accept a short break in recording to really free memory
anyway it's worth a try.
