Hallo,
I have the M-Audio Quattro USB thingie.
I configured an .asoundrc according to Patrick Shirkey's example on alsa-project.org. I can play music with alsaplayer, using the quattro1 or quattro2 devices.
But I cannot use Pd with any of the alsa-devices in that asoundrc like "-alsadev quattro" nor directly with "-alsadev default".
I'm using the current Debian package 0.36.0-cvs5, but cvs3 didn't work, either. Alsa is 0.9rc7. The error I'm getting is:
ALSA lib pcm_hw:454(snd_pcm_hw_start) SNDRV_PCM_IOCTL_START failed: Broken pipe
I'm at loss. Please help me...

A bit more info:
This problem only is valid on my Acer Travelmate 225xc notebook, as I found out now. I plugged the Quattro into my main PC, and here Pd started with "-alsadev hw:3,0" (usb-audio is the third card here) and played the test tone...

Hallo,
and now the last bit of info:
If I start "pd -oss" (no realtime) the machine hangs and wants the SysReq key combos...
It seems, somethings really wrong with Pd and this laptop.
BTW: usb-uhci and eth0 (the networkcard is module 8139too) share the same interrupt, 11. The 8139too doesn't support setting the interrupt, though.

I don't know if this is specific to your notebook. PD generally triggers a bug in ALSA's OSS emulation, so do not use it with ALSA and -oss.
BTW: usb-uhci and eth0 (the networkcard is module 8139too) share the same interrupt, 11. The 8139too doesn't support setting the interrupt, though.
It is really hard to say. In the CVS there is yet another version of s_linux.c for ALSA. It may work (considering that alsaplayer works).

It was more like a desperate try, I don't intend to use OSS...

I think, I compiled the current CVS as well as the debian cvs5 package. (I'm recompiling Pd like crazy currently, because I somehow need to get Pd working for the LAD conference. I might have lost track, which version is currently running, but all failed on the laptop so far.)
I better get some sleep and try again tomorrow.

hi frank,
I read:

as a last resort you could try to use jack and pd -jack and see if this works.
good luck,

Hallo,
I'm getting a bit further:

Maybe it's not a problem of Pd alone: I get the same error with jack, when I try to start jack like "jackd -d alsa -d default", but jack works, when starting it with:
jackd -d alsa -d default -P (or -C only) jackd -d alsa -d hw:0 -P (or -C only)
And voila, now I can use "pd -jack".
But specifying "-noadc" does not help with ALSA-Pd, though.

Have you tried downgrading alsa? I've had serious problems (i.e. hard freezes) from the rc7-7 packages. (card is a delta44, btw). .. I'm currently holding at rc7-2 until a new set of packages comes out...

Hallo,
I came a great deal further in regard to my Quattro problem. Sleep is good. I downgraded the kernel from 2.4.20 to 2.4.18, and now I don't get the snd_pcm_start error anymore. I also can run jack much better, but only with "-alsa -n 3". If I use "-alsa -n 2" there are a lot of dropouts.
Now in Pd, something strange happens. I can run pd using hw:0 and then open the "Test audio/midi" patch.
Where normally the TEST TONE sounds like
"doooooooooooooooooooooooooh"
I get an interrupted tone like:
"doooh doooh doooh doooh"
I suppose, this has to do with a buffer size somewhere, but does anyone know what and how I should set?
Thank you,

Which version exhibits this problem ? THe debian repackaged and the version in CVS have fundamentally different ALSA drivers.
You should be able to set the buffersize -blocksize and number of fragments with -frags ... but ..

meaning the cvs version is probably better? i didn't realise this and just grabbed it and tried to see if it gave me any better alsa performance, but no such luck.
my age old alsa/pd problem would be rendered by frank as
"doooooo-crunch-doooooo-crunch-doooooo" ;)
the crunching is somewhat irregular.
i've had this problem with all of the pd version i've tried (that would be almost every miller tarball, and just now, the cvs version).
You should be able to set the buffersize -blocksize and number of fragments with -frags ... but ..
setting these values higher doesn't seem to give me any better results. setting them lower degrades the situation predictably.
anyhow, sorry about the vagueness of the problem report. but it would be great if i could get around this, as the alsa usb audio driver seems to (appart from this show stopping click) be able to do 6channel output with my emi2|6 under pd.

:( It gives better performance on the Hammerfall cards at least.

Do you have any full duplex programs running with that ? Which ones ? I think the only way to go with ALSA is to copy working code, so if we have a program that does full duplex in a similar way ...
What about jack ?
Might all the problems that we encounter be related to USB in general (Frank said its working on his desktop but not on his notebook ..) Well, after all, pretty clueless

a small clue, perhaps... when i run pd, i get this error message in /var/log/messages:
Mar 11 16:12:58 oto kernel: usb-uhci.c: iso_find_start: gap in seamless isochronous scheduling Mar 11 16:13:50 oto last message repeated 16 times
i don't get this message if i run pd with the oss usb driver, or if i run another working alsa program (i just tested alsa player).

Both stutter the same. I checked out cvs yesterday night, branch devel_0_36.

Yes, but... Blocksize doesn't really help. If I use blocksize as as large as 1024 it still has hickups every 2 seconds or so. And frags doesn't help at all.

Yep. Currently I get along with using Jack, it seems. I'm running a very complex 'performance' patch with auto-play function for an hour on Jack now, and apart from a bug in a LADSPA plugin, it runs and runs and runs...
Jack definetly would be a possible model for copy-and-paste action, I guess. It seems, there is a lot of ALSA knowledge hidden inside Jack.

GÃŒnther, you know what: I got rid of the stuttering! It only required that I run Pd with a samplerate of 48000 instead of 41000! Works with both the Debian and the cvs-version. Yippie...
Now I only hope, that none of the externals I use requires 44100 hardcoded...

some of the mp3 decoders are pretty dependent on samplerate..
i noticed this because my maestro3 sounds terrible at 44100 because of low quality samplerate converting dsp code in the opensource driver. but mp3play~ was playing at the wrong speed when run at 48000.

I think, mp3play~ may need an update. It also cannot play several of the mp3's from various online labels (e.g. thinnerism.com). I think, it doesn't like VBR or high bitrates. I didn't look deeper into it, and I guess I'll use alsaplayer for DJ'ing anyway.

I'm half way through doing a mad (http://www.underbit.com/products/mad/) mp3 player external that should also be able to play ogg vorbis files when finished, it's just that I'm currently too busy doing other stuff to finish it (ideally it should support variable speed and direction)

x,
I'm also working on somthing similar. I'm trying to get a code-base together based on readsf~ (which is rock solid on my system) that can play most formats - ogg, mp3, wav, aiff...maybe then also compilable support for flac, speex, etc.
a readanysf~, or something like that.
what do you have so far? variable speed and direction are a plus, but I also think it should also be able to seek and spit out time - with a bang at the end-of-file for looping and other control purposes. would also be cool to get it to read files or http/rtp.
I have been trying with various libs - ffmpeg and gstreamer as a general lib, and ogg, mad and libmpeg for my own bare-bones classes. Im also looking at Olaf's and Yves code for their ogg and mp3 players.
maybe we should get together.
