hi all,
forgot to metion in my last mail that in most windowmanagers alt-somewhat combos always belong to either the wm or to the used toolkit/gui-kit (for example to access menu entrys and the like) to have "good" keybindings in an application, its better to use the shift, ctrl, or alt-gr key(s) in combination with the mouse or other keys. simple to remeber : anything with an alt-key belongs somehow to the gui-kit....... at least i dont know any shift/ctrl-click combinations that belong to a wm/gui-kit directly.
greets,
chris

I would like it that way, too. Altough I think, that a decent window manager should be configurable in this regard (like sawfish for example is), I am quite fond of blackbox, which has all three alt-clicks hardcoded to move/raise-lower/resize.
"Blackbox follows the rules and assumptions set forth in the
Inter-Client Communications Conventions Manual (ICCCM) as
closely as possible (this is a work in progress, some of the
colormap handling is still unsupported). Blackbox isn't FULLY
ICCCM compliant because of the explicit key grabs (also known
as HotKeys) it provides to simplify operation."

Unfourtunatly PD doesn't think of Alt-Gr as just another Alt-Key, so I could not use this key instead, becaus to blackbox Alt-Gr isn't Alt, too.

So I get the impression I should confine myself to ctrl, shift, and alt-gr keys as mouse click modifiers... just one question: what's "alt-gr"??? I can't find one on any ofthe keyboards here...
thanks Miller

hi miller,
alt-gr is the alt-key on the right side of the space bar. its the one used to get, for example, the @ symbol (alt-gr + q)

is the alt-gr specific to german language keyboards? i recently had to use pd on a deutch system and relearn lots of key combos, and remember that extra alt key. @ is shift+2 in the states.

No, AltGr is specific for all international languages that include some sort of accents. AltGr + <accent key> and then <latin1 key>. <accent keys> are usually the top (number) row. AltGr is also used for accessing the EUR and other international currency symbols.
On slovenian keyboard AltGr is used for accessing []{}|@ because their usual places are taken by national (Latin2) characters.
I myself prefer US keyboard because '/' is left of the right shift key. :) But I am using AltGr to access national characters. But I am making a great use of special "Win" and "Menu" keys in fvwm2. The "Win" key is for moving/resizing of windows and "Menu"+<arrow key> is great for moving around the virtual desktop.
