this is a real beginner question but i cant see it in the help files
to creat a symbol I make message box and write (symbol 123456) By doing this, $1 represents 123456 anywhere in my programme
so how do I make a new variable?? As in how can I have maybe $2(or anything) represent a new number like 56789?
i dont think you quite understand $'s yet, you should go reread 14.dollarsigns.pd and /pd/doc/1.manual/x2.htm#s6.5 again

Also, it sounds like you are coming from a standard programming background. Pd works differently, so you don't really think about variables so much, but rather messages and how they flow.
Here's a quick summary of $ vars:
patch. (You can see the creation arguments at the top of the patch's window, next to its filename)
message box receives.
But yeah, you should read or reread those docs.
