Hello, all! I'm trying to compile the latest extended (0.40.3) on my 64-bit Kubuntu system. I went through the following process:
cd pd/src autoconf configure-in > configure
Theoretically, that made the configure script. All seems well until:

I don't know enough about the build scripts to figure out where the syntax error is and how to correct it. If anyone can help me out, I'd greatly appreciate it. Also, if anyone can help me with how to package this whole thing up, maybe the 64-bit version could be offered up along with all of the others.
Thank you for the help!

You have to run 'aclocal' first, I think. The whole process is
automated if you do this:
cd packages/linux_make/ make install && make package
Then you'll end up with a .deb that you can install. There will be
some bugs still with 64-bitness. It's great to test this stuff so we
can make proper 64-bit builds for the next release.

To try to narrow down the possibilities, I decided to delete the directory and re-unpack the tarball, then I ran your instructions (without doing anything else) and got this output:
darren@ashe:~/Downloads/Pd-0.40.3-extended/packages/linux_make$ sudo make install && make package find: /home/darren/Downloads/Pd-0.40.3-extended/packages/linux_make/build/: No such file or directory dpkg-shlibdeps: need at least one executable

Hopefully, that will help. (The sudo also doesn't make a difference. I get the same error with or without it.) Sorry to be a pain.

It looks like it's specifically looking for the 32-bit version of a library, which of course would not be on my system. (I'm guessing the header in question is in the pthreads package, but I'm not exactly sure.) Ubuntu doesn't really do 32/64 bit mixed systems very well, I'm afraid.
Oh well, this is all part of the fun, right? Personally, I'd rather be making music, but anything I can do to help the software run better, I'll give it my best.
Thank you all for the help.

i think this is not the problem. that problem seems to be rather, that the Make-process explicitely asks for a 32bit build (with the "-m32" flag).
re-reading your post, i noticed that you actually are trying to build a 0.40 version on a 64bit machine; unless you do not intend to use tables, you will be very unhappy with this.
the biggest change from Pd-0.40 to 0.41 was, that it became fully useable with 64bit machines (i remember well my red fac, when i presented Pd on a local radio-station and eventually played H05.filter.floyd.pd which just didn't work :-()
i think you should probably try to get the current svn pd-extended to run (good luck)

That sounds just a little dangerous, but I'm game. If it fails to work, I'll just re-load my system 32-bit for now. Someday in the future, maybe 64-bit will be king, but for music production for now (even on Mac and PC) 32-bit is still dominant.

Okay, the latest pd-extended svn is giving me the *exact* same error with stubs-32.h as the latest release tarball did. I don't know how to solve that, other than to re-load my system as 32-bit. I don't really want to do that, but switching back to Windows would still be worse.
I'll likely do that sometime tonight unless someone else has a great idea or two to try first. :-)
Thank you for your help.

i doubt, that it could be called a 'great idea', but why does it need to be pd-extended, if you're going to compile it anyway yourself? why don't you just compile pd and those libraries, that you really need?

Well, I'm a complete newbie to Pd and really have no idea what stuff I'll need, so I wanted to start from the same baseline as most of everyone else. Besides, I've already tried compiling the latest vanilla source, and I kept running into completely different problems. I'll give it one more shot, though, before re-installing 32-bit Kubuntu.
Thanks for the reply.

Well, I guess I get to figure out where to go from here. Thanks for the help!

Also, building the stuff manually will only benefit him, while
working to get 64-bit Pd-extended builds will benefit everyone who
wants a native 64-bit build of Pd-extended.
If you are missing anything going forward, check this page to make
sure you have all of these packages installed. I think the packages
should all be the same for 64-bit Kubuntu as the 32-bit version:
