does anyone know of (or have) a working physical model of a bowed string for pd?
and a related question: I managed to get a hold of a max file (a mac compiled file of some unknown sort - I know very little of max, and I couldn't open it on the demo version of msp which I downloaded to unloc the files secrets) of such a physical model, anyone know of a way to translate max to pd?
thanks Oded

Yes: Load the cyclone library with "-lib cyclone", create a [cyclone] object, click on it and open the Max file with the file chooser that pops up.

that does not open a file chooser but a patch wich contains [pd
PDDP_META] here.
osx pd 0.39.2-ext

That's a somehow known bug with how pd-extendend and cyclone work together. I don't know if there is a fix for it yet.

Which reminds me: The abstraction you see is the cyclone "pddp-meta"-patch. These are always called just like the library, which suddenly to me doesn't seem like a good idea, because if you import that library it introduces an avoidable nameclash with the library itself, if or maybe with other objects.
Assume I made a library to deal with textfile-managing and I wanted to call it "textfile". Then the metafile would be "textfile.pd" but it would nameclash with the [textfile] builtin.
I believe, the meta-file should have a different name composed of the library name and an additional post- or prefix, like "cyclone-PDDP.pd", or live in a "meta" subdirectory or something like that. Comments?

Uh. I thought that it had to be a [pd META] subpatch in cyclone-help.pd ?

We've honed the design of the meta stuff a bit in the PDDP, so this
is old. I am updating the relevant stuff now.
The libdir meta file will be $LIBRARY-meta.pd, i.e. cyclone-meta.pd,
fixing the above issue. The meta subpatch is standardized on [pd META].
Look for these changes in tomorrow's nightly builds.

For musically effective externals/patches you should look at Stefania Serafin's site: http://ccrma.stanford.edu/~serafin/ She's got her PhD in Stanford with J. O. Smith and now works in Denmark (http://www.imi.aau.dk/~sts/)
We in Verona (http://www.di.univr.it/dol/main?ent=arearic&id=3&lang=en) have developed some physical models of interaction (impact and friction) between resonators. The software package was originally developed within the European research project Sounding Object www.soundobject.org and consisted of externals and patches for pd. On the aforementioned site you'll find the old package with modal resonators only. At present the package includes 2 kind of resonators: a modal one and a waveguide one, the latter simulating a simple string. I'm currently rewriting the externals for flext. Note that our package is not intended for musical purposes, indeed the control parameters are not musically functional (e.g. the "bow" has infinite length and one can only control the force pulling it and that bearing it down on the string). Nevertheless, if you're interested, we can give you a copy of the source code with makefiles for linux, mac os x and windows.
