Hi list~
I was wondering if anyone had used processing (http://processing.org/) for interface work or algorithm programming. It is made by some people at MIT and is based in Java. It has libraries which allow UDP and OSC communication, as well as much video stuff. I have just grown curious about it, so any comments from experienced users would be appreciated.

we have been using it for few tests, and it is nice to use. You can easily connect it to Pd via OSC and it seems to run ok in all platforms. You can save what you do as applets. And if need you can fairly easily use any other java library, as far as i know i havent done it myself. They have a mailing list that seems to be ok and there are many examples around to check and learn. I think it is a nice "safe" environment to work with, I find it myself too safe for my taste but i guess many people might love it. I heard that it is actually based on a quite old java specification, a java programmer told me that it is "8 years old technology packaged in a nice looking way", i think there is a but of this, but no doubt it will help many people "scaping" from other more restricted frameworks like for example Flash. Thats all i can say, probably other people will be able to say more in depth comments about it.
On the other hand we are also developing our own Python based OpenGL 2D engine which should actually run faster and it is nicer to program with. I heard that next version of processing will be OpenGL based, this would make it much more faster. HOwever i find programming in Python so much nicer than java that i doubt i would go for processing, but this is very personal thing :)
if you are interested on the python 2d engine we will release a second alpha version soon.

If it's openGL based, would you still be able to embed it in an html file? I presume website art installations are the primary intended use of processing.
Hello guys and gals,
several objects in IEM lib do not work on my Pd. It seems that some of the base objects do not exist. For example: I can put [lp2~] in my window but the internal window lacks connections because [filter~] does not exist. There are more items that do not exist like [split] and [prvu~] and probably a lot more as well. It has probably got to do with the libraries that do not load.
I currently use Pd 0.37.0 with Iemlib 1.15. on Win2k. I copied the .dll files to the right location but I did not compile them because I do not have a compiler. Is this the cause of my problems and how do I solve them? Do I have to compile the files with the folder I use (which is G:\pd\ ) or can I use somebody else's compiled dll files?

well, you have to tell pd to load the libraries. to repeat myself: either with "-lib iemlib1:iemlib2" or by creating objects [iemlib1] & [iemlib2] (oh, this seems like a deja-vu; try searching the pd-list-archives) and don't forget to add the iemabs-folder to your "-path"

Well that's just the strangest thing. This is the contents of my startup batch file:
pd -mididev 1,2,3,4,6,7 -asio -sounddev 3 -audiobuf 20 -path "G:\pd\extra\Framestein\Patches" -path "G:\pd\gripd" -lib gripd -lib gem-0.87/Gem -path G:\pd\iemabs -path G:\pd\externs -lib iemlib1:iemlib2:iem_mp3:iem_t3_lib
All in one line.
Still on startup Pd says it cannot load the library...

i don't see the "-verbose" flag that eventuall might tell you (and me, and all the others) more about the error pd encounters when trying to load something it can't.
oh, and now i remember in a corner of my brain that the ":" separator might not work on windows: so try "-lib iemlib1 -lib iemlib2 ..." (and put the iemlibs into pd\extra instead of pd\externs (then you won't need the path-flag for that): the place for externals has been one of the major misunderstandings in the history of pd)

humm ... i hadnt thought about this... then it is not possible that it is based on opengl of course! I obviously missunderstood something.
java is integrating more with openGL soon so i guess that could be what the mean. i don't think that would effect it's running in a browser. there is supposedly also a java to openGL exporter in progress for processing somewhere
