I would suggest to try xine or vlc for osx, which can be controlled from lirc or shell commands. Xine also have a telnet server.

Another option to consider is Mplayer for OSX (http://mplayerosx.sourceforge.net/). It has a "-slave" option to control it from the shell, so you would need the "shell" external from the ggee collection.

i got ggee's [shell] external but not the help file i intend to use it to control Mplayer (under os X) reading a dvd, as Marc Lavallée suggested. any tips on how to do that? i am not familiar with the [shell] ext. ta

send her the messages you'd write in the command line there are some limitations, though. I think guenter posted about that once.

I'm trying to do as I suggested, but there's a few problems. I can start playing a DVD title, but the slave mode doesn't work because the "send" command of the shell external doesn't send the required linefeed. Also, if I move any PD's window, mplayer freezes until I release the mouse button.
So basically it doesn't work as expected, but if you only need to start and stop a dvd title without controlling it (pause, seek, etc), it works.
There's hope: a tcp/ip daemon to control mplayer: http://mplayerd.sf.net/ But I don't know yet how to use it from PD... -- Marc

Along those lines, you can use the osascript command to send applescript
events to DVD Player. It's a powerful way of controlling the applications
you know and love. Insert a disc and get it playing. Enter the following
at the command line:
osascript -e 'tell application "DVD Player"
pause dvd \
end tell'
(The backslashes are followed immediately by Return. The shell will give you a prompt for the second and third lines of the command.)
Its application to pd should be fairly obvious from there...

I just found how to do the equivalent with xine; there's a remote control application called "xine-remote". Included is a script to start xine in dvd mode and a pd patch to control xine remotely. There's many more commands available, and others ways to control it. Xine is lovely too... -- Marc
