hi all,
sorry for this off-topic posting, but since there are several people on this list, who have some experiences with running a hdsp with linux, maybe someone could help me...
i've got a problem with my brand new hdsp multiface / cardbus ... i got everything working so far ... modules are installed and can upload the firmware ... i can even use the hdspmixer to mix the incoming sounds to the outputs ...
but i didn't manage to play any sound from the computer ... i can start jack / pd / spiralmodular, but all i hear is a distorted sound, that sounds a bit similar to what i expect the signal to sound ... the pitch of the distortion changes when i change the rate of the sample clock source ... any idea what could cause this behaviour ? btw, i can't start jack when i set the sample clock source to values greater than 62khz ... the strangest thing ... when starting the audio application, the output signal that is routed from the input channels has these distortions, too, until i stop the application...

Have anything to do with blocksize and audiobuff of the applications, not Jack?
Which versions of Jack and ALSA and from where?
Did you try to change the frames per period? What happens if you only use native Jack clients? Try routing sound into Jack, through Jack Rack and out again.
btw, i can't start jack when i set the sample clock source to values greater than 62khz ...
you need to change the mode of the card to Double Speed to use higher sampling rates. see here:

Sounds like a question for Linux-Audio-User or Jack lists. They also have some HDSP specialists there!
goodluck, d.

i tried various blocksizes without success...
Which versions of Jack and ALSA and from where?
jack 0.90.1, alsa 0.9.8 or 1.0.0_rc2 ... both compiled from gentoo ebuild files...
Does it run under just ALSA? What about OSS/OSS emulation?
when any application tries to access the sound device (alsa or oss) the sound routed from the analog inputs to the line out sounds distorted ... when stoping the application (or dsp in pd) the line out sounds good, again...

i haven't tried that, but i doubt, that it's a jack problem, but an alsa problem...

i read that ... i used to change the sample clock source with hdsploader, but jack didn't wanted to start (i'll have to check for the error message)
[emphasis on *brand new* mine] You might investigate this firmware version problem. There are different stories going around about whether or not you [need to/are able to] downgrade the firmware of an HDSP made after a certain date. ALSA list might also be a good place to check. This downgrade is only possible using windoze utilities, unfortunately...
i downgraded the firmware as i read in dieb13's howto's

it's probably a good idea to ask there ...
thanks ...

Hi again Tim,
Another thought.....

I believe HDSP Firmware downgrading is not a relevant issue anymore for HDSP+ALSA.

Hi there !
Well before playing around and testing i would check the cardbus and the multiface on windows ...
It can happen that the eeprom is confused with the DSP Card it happened to me and it can only be repaired by rme, a sign for that if you cannot upload the firmware anymore with the flash-utility.
Which i dont think is the case in your case because you said that the firmware upload in Linux works ok ??
Have you tried aplay ??? Make sure you have a proper Preset File for hdspmixer, because not only the volumes are set but also the routing......
Check the output of amixer contents!
Maybe that give a hint to someone on alsa-user list

that's probably a good idea, i used a windows machine to downgrade the firmware, but i haven't tried anything else on another machine with this card...

well, i can upload my firmware, so it shouldn't be such a problem...

playing with aplay works ... that means i can hear something similar to the sound file i'm trying to play, but it seems to be distorted, something like every dsp block for its own is played correctly, but single dsp blocks aren't in sync ...
