hi ppl, i got rid of yuv dir and all references on it and finally got Gem installed against gcc 3.2, but when i do: $ pd -lib /usr/local/lib/pd/externs/Gem
i get:
couldn't open MIDI input device 1 couldn't open MIDI output device 1 opened 0 MIDI input device(s) and 0 MIDI output device(s). GEM: IOhannes m zmoelnig GEM: ver: 0.87+cvs GEM: compiled: Jan 12 2003
which sounds cool but when i try 1st example and do [create], it says:
error: GEM: Unable to create single buffer window error: GEM: Error creating const context error: GEM: A serious error occured creating const Context error: GEM: Do not continue!
and i didn't continue :)
any suggestions... m@rcell.net
hi marcell,

this is what I sometimes get when I use wrong drivers or libs what does glxinfo report ? glxgears ? what gfx card are you using ?

this shouldn't be much of a problem if you don't intend to use single-buffer'ed mode. Most people will prefer double-buffering anyhow (but single-buffering let's you do some interesting things) Anyhow, do cntinue (and save patches, esp. before "destroy"ing the gemwin)

I have a somehow OT followup question to that: When experimenting with GLUT (3.76) i realized that a window content drawn with single-buffering mode gets destroyed when the window is moved. The window is not notified that it needs a graphical refresh. Is this a GLUT bug or is there a workaround or is it even intended? On the other hand, is this different with freeglut or other windowing systems?
so many questions... thanks, Thomas

GLUT should not have any influence in Gem. The only thing it is used for is for drawing the teapot AFAIK.

My version of pd is hacked to give information about the various mouse-key combinations into a special-made external. I believe the mouse wheel uses something like a fourth and fifth button rapidly pressed? I can test and see if that theory makes sense when I get home.
this brings me to some thoughts i had for some time now: would be great for handling (live/realtime) the mousewheel and keyboard cursor keys for number boxes. and should be easy to set up in tcltk

that was about what i was thinking ... number boxes and sliders.
and that's why: when playing movies with mplayer you can cue back/forth using the mousewheel, so can do kindof "digital scratching", which i thought would be nice in pd too - scrubbing through a soundfile for example.
and yes, the mousewheel is basically a 3d and 4th button.
thanks for info. blip, ub
I threw together an abstraction (attached) for Griffin's PowerMate that generically maps the up- and down- arrows and page-up and page-down to increment/decrement a state value.
I've only tested it on my Mac, so the key-number mappings internal to the abstraction might need to be adjusted manually. I've also used this with a scroll-wheel by using a control panel that maps the scroll wheel to these keys.

Hope it's useful to someone.

I think this was a general OpenGL question, not really Gem related. (and I can't answer it)
