hello,
i have two short questions that hopefully somebody will be able to answer. i'm using pd 0.37 on os x with a motu828mkII audio card.
is there a vst~ or plugin~ object for os x? it would be very usefull, but i don't have the programming experience to make/port one myself.
(this is a less important question, but something that i've been wondering about) i remember that for a while there was talk about changing pd's default font.. is this a difficult thing to do? i'm not a big fan of courier and would like to change my pd font if it's not too hard. this isn't really that important.. i was just wondering.
matt.

I guess for now your only option is editing pd.tk and no it's not difficult, just keep a backup of the original ;)

i had this idea to make a nice tutorial of tips i've collected for Pd. i never really did. i started one tip: installing fonts.
check it here if you like:
http://www.audionerd.com/projects/pd/tips/
i think i'll keep adding to this tutorial idea though
release early, release often!

Hi,
This is a fantastic idea, I think the possibility of changing the fonts is really cool. Do you allow me to include this at pure-data.org ?

hi guenter,
feel free to add a link to it from pure-data.org, but i'm planning on updating the page frequently on my site, so the most recent version will be there (it's faster for me to update my site once and send links than to update various community sites.. until there's an RSS feed or something that can distribute it.. which might be a nice idea.. :)
we should all thank andre for the font. it makes patch editing much easier on the eyes.. thanks andre!
i think when this came up before, miller objected to anything that had to be placed into system-specific directories. otherwise, this could be included in the Pd distro. i tried using some font converters to get it running in linux, but had no success..
if we could get it crossplatform, it might change people's mind about Pd? the biggest complaint i hear about Pd is about the ugly GUI.

I believe it wouldn't take so much effort to make Pd look like jMax. I think the most difficult part may be that several (I don't know how many) Pd users are quite attached to the current oldskool look of Pd and are somehow proud of its "minimalistic" two-tone black-and-white style.
Nevertheless I think it would be a good thing to have, at least as an option in the main release of Pd.

I think the simple look is awesome, when I'm programming. With the adjusted font, it's crisp and clean.
But when I'm actually writing music, I like to have abstractions with GUIs, and tcl is just to slow on my box for this to be practical.
To be honest, I will be happy to see whatever replacement comes for the tcl GUI.

I just used pd in teaching my class for a lecture "Alternative soundtrack techniques for Time Based Media" and i will say that people didn't mind the colors etc..and i saw a few lights go on when i told them (50/50, FA and CISE) how to use it. I also showed Cecilia, which some felt was more difficult to use then pd. Though, instead of changing pd's appearance i am always voting for ease of operation.
I know this will sound very mspeeee but i would love something simple like "quickrecord" built in. i know its lazy its cheese or what have you but i think that should go into a major release. right from the menu dumps an .aiff or what have you to pd/tmp.aiff
Is this lame?

The lack of "beauty" is one reason to use PD, because it shows that good softwares has little to do with nice GUIs. But I wouldn't mind using a better font for PD under Linux. Is it possible to convert this font to ttf, so Linux users can have a look? Any screenshot? -- Marc
hi Marc,
if i would convert the BITMAP font to a TTF font it wouldn't anymore do that what i wanted = the looks and size of the font would be 100% the same on every OS. (well, works only on win32 cause i don't know how do to bitmap fonts for linux/osx)
why did i do a BITMAP font: because TTF fonts contain only "commands" how to draw the fonts, so every OS has they own way to implement them. BITMAP fonts contains the font exactly so how it it presented on the screen. the biggest problem with TTF and specially with the "courier" font is when we use small sizes = unreadable, i cant read my patches under fontsize 10, and fontsize 10 is allso hard to read.
thats why i made BITMAP-fonts, readability on smallsizes...
...
i just installed winXP for the first time and i'm VERY pleased about the clear-type(antialiasing) font rendering, but still fontsizes smaller than 10 are just not readable.
...
is there maybe a "cross-platform-bitmap-font-rendering-engine" ?
...
for the screenshots, try to search for "pd font" in the archives, i think i posted some shots. (if you don't find anything, let me know and i'll try to search in my chaotic backup system)
cheers -andre ps. for the looks, i find "courier" is the most readable (screen)font i know (and with some tweaks it wouldn't look so "old" ;)

Since you have a history of plugging references to french cultural elements in funny ways, I thought you'd appreciate to be reminded of this all-too-old lyric by Lucien Francoeur, to be spoken in a deep, personal voice (here translated for all eyes to read):
"I love you because you are ugly"

My favorite quote from Francoeur is "ma poupée en gyprock" ("my plasterboard doll"). 80's rock poetry...
Using PD instead of Max is very challenging in some contexts where most people uses Max; at some point there's no arguments left to explain why PD is a better choice other than stating that ugliness is the most prominent feature of free softwares. Of course jMax is not handicaped by this essential feature. ( B.T.W., have you seen DIP for jMax? http://www.dacreation.com/dips.html http://sourceforge.net/projects/dipsforjmax/ )
PD's gui is not ugly, it is simple and is lacking some useful features. But the more I try FLTK, the more I like it. SpiralSynth, SpiralLoops and spiralsynthmodular have "nice" GUIs made with FLTK. There's even a tcl/tk binding for FLTK 1.* : http://pages.infinit.net/cclients/files/fltk.html -- Marc
does anyone remember the exact string or like, a regexp to replace the font in pd.tk? i thought it was just instances of "courier" changing to "piidii" ...
i think the new font makes a lot of difference in my workflow. i'm super visually oriented... any little improvement helps me feel more comfortable in Pd..
